Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which animated television show that takes place in a non-state-specific town of Springfield was the first animated show to last twenty years, and features nuclear power, doughnuts, and some tall blue hair?

Answer: The Simpsons

"The Simpsons" was so iconic that its main character, Homer Simpson, was declared one of the 25 Most Influential People of the Last 25 years by Time Magazine in 2007 for his portrayal of a decidedly American brand of ironic humor. "The Simpsons" is a FOX network show and long held the title of longest-running scripted primetime series.
2. Which show, which airs on Comedy Central, features an oft-killed central character (oh my god!), and was created by two writers with a famous obsession with the Mormon Church?

Answer: South Park

"South Park" is a famously bizarre and off-color show which takes place in South Park, Colorado, is famous for killing off one of its central characters, Kenny, in every episode. Also, the show's creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker are the writers of "The Book of Mormon", which lampoons the Mormon Church - just like at least one episode of the television show does.
3. Which actor, who appeared in "Animal House" and "Van Wilder," provided the voice of Jonny Quest on the popular animated series that debuted in 1964?

Answer: Tim Matheson

Tim Matheson, well known for playing frightening live-action roles, did voice the lead character in "Jonny Quest," a Hanna Barbera cartoon which ran on ABC until its darker action-oriented content led to its cancellation.
4. The FOX Network's animated series, "King of the Hill" takes place in the city of Arlen in what state?

Answer: Texas

Arlen, Texas is indeed the home of "King of the Hill" characters Hank, Boomhauer, Dale, and Bill. Texas is well represented in the animated television front, also being the home of Nickelodeon character "Jimmy Neutron" in "Retroville".
5. A super-hero cartoon character from the 60s was revamped in the '90s into a program that was largely a parody of talk shows. With an alien praying mantis as a bandleader and a producer/director made entirely out of lava, what show aimed at an adult audience was this?

Answer: Space Ghost Coast to Coast

"Space Ghost Coast to Coast" ran for about five years on the Cartoon Network and later in re-runs on Adult Swim and Gametap. UK, Australian and Canadian viewers could also watch this show at some point between 1994 and 2008. The program was absurdly amusing in a "Saturday Night Live" sort of way. Everything on the show was animated except for the guests (actual celebrities) who, at least in the first several episodes, didn't realize the whole thing was a farce.
6. Which long-running PBS show features an aardvark as a main character, and is largely educationally bent?

Answer: Arthur

Arthur and his friends are a group of kids with varying interests and family lives who learn about life and face many serious issues that affect children. It has held the title of longest-running PBS animated program.
7. Which FOX program follows a man named Philip Fry who is displaced 1,000 years from his home time period and befriends Turanga and Bender?

Answer: Futurama

"Futurama" has as a main concept idea that one can be cryogenically frozen for years and then re-awakened. Philip Fry, a man from the 2000s, is frozen for 1,000 years and wakes up in a future era where he has a fish-out-of-water experience.
8. What children's show, which premiered in 1953, required viewers to purchase a "magic drawing screen" and crayons to follow the storyline?

Answer: Winky Dink and You

"Winky Dink and You" followed the adventures of a boy named Winky Dink and his dog, Woofer. The "magic screen" (which was a piece of green plastic) and crayons cost fifty cents. Each program contained a segment where children placed the "magic screen" on the TV and connected dots to complete a picture.

The show was eventually cancelled because parents complained that their children were sitting too close to the television screen, and drawing directly on the TV screen.
9. What children's show, which involved a pilot, his ward, Spinner, and their dog, Paddlefoot, was notorious for the poor quality of its animation?

Answer: Clutch Cargo

No one who has seen "Clutch Cargo" can ever forget the incredibly poor animation on this series. In an effort to save money, every possible corner was cut. In many scenes, only the characters' mouths moved. One of the writers bragged, "Footage that Disney does for $250,000 we do for $18,000." Despite the poor production values, "Clutch Cargo" was very popular.

The same studio released another animated series, "Space Angel" which used the same "only the lips move" technique.
10. Which show from the late 90s and early 2000s featured a family of explorers who move about in a mobile home? The main character is the daughter of the family, who has the very helpful gift of being able to talk to animals.

Answer: The Wild Thornberrys

"The Wild Thornberrys" celebrated the exploratory instinct of naturalists and children by idolizing the heroine Eliza and her crazy family. The show was a zany Nickelodeon piece that lasted five seasons spawned a movie as well.
