Because her ex-husband was trying to blackmail her, Catherine went to his house to see if she could change him mind about demanding so much money. She couldn't and that's when she left her make-up case.

2. When Catherine told Ben that she didn't want to be a pest, how did he respond?

Catherine wanted ot be involved with the case so she was going over statements, evidence, etc. She told Ben that she didn't want to be a pest because she was afraid she'd get in his way.
