Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sunshine Arena is faced with a major technical problem. What has broken down?

Answer: Air conditioning

The air conditioning at the Sunshine Arena has broken down and everyone is desperately hugging fans of all shapes and sizes in order to try to cool off. Alright, Roman is the only one actually hugging a fan, but everyone is having a difficult time keeping cool.

In the San Diego summer, it's certainly not an easy task. Ben is determined to fix the problem, especially with the big game the next day being set to be played.
2. Right at the beginning of the episode, someone approaches Ben about a raise. Who wants more money?

Answer: The mascot

The mascot tells Ben that he wants a raise just as Ben gets out of his car and notices for the first time that the air conditioning is broken. Ben, obviously, refuses to raise the mascot's salary. The mascot argues that he's at the arena every night and that he "engenders pep, people need pep", but Ben informs him that he's only supposed to be at the arena for four hours a week and nobody can understand what the mascot is doing there for all those extra hours anyway.

The mascot threatens to quit, to which Ben responds, "Leave the suit at the front gate."
3. Ben tries to get the maintenance workers to fix the problem. However, he discovers that he doesn't know their names. What is the collective name he decides to call them all?

Answer: Steve

Ben decides to have the maintenance workers be known as the Steves. He's informed that one worker's name is actually Steve, so he informs him that it's a win-win situation for him all around. The maintenance workers are clearly not pleased as being grouped as "Steves" and they refuse to go back to work because of Ben's indifference.

Remember "Bobbert" from the pilot episode? He's back and he's upset!
4. Roman takes a poll in the arena: What percentage of the workers like Ben?

Answer: 0%

That's right, not a single worker in the arena likes Ben! Roman originally tells ben that he's been vindicated, but then, when Ben smiles and says that people like him, Roman admits that he doesn't really know what the word 'vindicated' means. Roman goes around with one question on his poll, and no matter what way Ben tries to swing it, not a single worker in the arena seemed to like him.

He convinces himself that it's because he doesn't know anybody's name, and, because it's so hot, he has to do something to get the air conditioning working again.
5. What gift does Crystal get from Diane, and later Ben receives as well?

Answer: Some banana bread

Diane bakes Crystal some banana bread every week which she gives to her as Crystal is trying to show Ben the importance of knowing everyone's names. As soon as Diane leaves Crytal's office, Crystal dumps the banana bread in the garbage to Ben's shock. Later in the show when Ben is on good relations with the staff, he too receives some of Diane's banana bread.
6. Crystal, in the meantime, wants to go with Alonzo and Alice on a double-date. What is her date's name?

Answer: Darius

Crystal is excited in inviting Alice and Alonzo on a double date because watching their relationship bloom and flourish has been to Crystal both "fascinating and enlightening". Or so she tells them, at least. She wants them to meet her "new fella" and thought that Alonzo would know him. She says that all the brothers ought to know each other, or at least so she assumed.
7. Roman decides to help Ben learn all of the workers' names using a system that helped him learn all of his classmates' names while at university. Which university did Roman attend?

Answer: University of Phoenix

Roman knew all of his classmates' names at the University of Phoenix. When Ben remarks that it's an online university that has no campus, Roman rebuts with the fact that "that made it that much harder". Roman suggests using flash cards with people's names on then, and then developing a description of the person that matches their initials. Ben admits that it's actually a really good idea.
8. What is the mnemonic that Ben uses to remember Fred Patterson's name?

Answer: Fat pumpkin

When Roman initially suggests "friendly personality" to remember Fred Patterson's initials, Ben remarks that it's a little bit too vague and he'd have a hard time remembering that. Ben amends it to "fat pumpkin" because Fred has a face that's like a blimp, and he's got a very odd skin hue.

Roman is unsure of all the mnemonics Ben comes up with, for example, "disgusting moles" or "walks funny". Roman feels that the mnemonics ought to be a wee bit nicer.
9. When Ben's flash cards get loose and everyone gets mad at Ben, he decides to have an 'affinity circle' to try and clear the air. How does he try to ensure that everybody won't talk all at once?

Answer: He passes around a conch.

Roman loses Ben's flash cards as he was collecting the fans from the arena. While in the upper section of the arena, he decides to turn a fan up high and to sing Cher's song "Believe" at the top of his lungs. In the meantime, the flash cards, which were on the ledge behind Roman, get blown onto the arena grounds.

In honor of the only book Ben has ever read, "Lord of the Rings", ahem, "Lord of the Flies", Ben passes around a conch to whoever wants to roast him. The only conch Roman was able to get his hands on is a little tiny conch. Ben is appalled at the size of the conch becasue "this is San Diego, they made the library out of conches.
10. Crystal's date appears at the arena and gets introduced to Alonzo and Alice. What is his profession?

Answer: Dentist

Crystal's date turns out to be Alonzo's fraternity brother from their university days that Alonzo had known as "Rusty". Ever since Rusty became a dentist, he decided to go by his middle name because it seems that "people are a little leery of a dentist named Rusty".

While Crystal's references to Darius led both Alonzo and Alice to believe that Darius was black, all the references actually referred to his being a fraternity brother. Also, Crystal thought that Alice was older than Alonzo, and when Alice informs Crystal that Alonzo is ten years older than she is, Crystal has the decency to look a little bit sheepish (or maybe that was her hair).
