Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What pastime did Ellie tell Sean she took up after menopause?

Answer: writing mystery novels

Ellie confessed to Sean, "Most of our marriage I was all about Carl, and then, after menopause, I got this sudden surge of energy and I just started writing these little murder mysteries and Carl was very supportive of me; he even read my drafts for me.

But then when he expressed feelings of missing me, I was pretty much, 'Don't rain on my parade.' And then I called home one night - I was on a book tour in London - and he claimed not to know who I was. He said his wife had run away and I became angry and I told him that his sense of humor was very passive-aggressive and then, three days later, my son called and told me that they found him, wandering in the neighborhood in his pajama bottoms, filthy and dehydrated, and he couldn't remember which house was his, and basically, he's never recognized me again." Sean was obviously touched by the story and tried to console Ellie, saying "I am so sorry." Ellie replied by asking, "Doctor, have you ever hurt anyone you love? In such a way that doesn't even seem like you, but then you can't go back and make it different.

It's a kind of pain I never could have imagined." Though Sean clearly felt sympathetic and related Ellie's story to his own problems with Sean, he told her he couldn't risk the surgery considering the danger her age posed.
2. What treat did Ellie bring to Carl?

Answer: guava pastry

She reminded him that they used to walk to Alba's every day and the guava pastry was his favorite. When Carl showed no recognition of either his wife or her reminiscing, Sean tried talking to him. Carl asked Sean, "Do you know my wife? She's the love of my life.

She never comes to see me." Sean replied sadly, "You must be very lonely without your family, Carl." This seemed enough to convince Sean to do the surgery, since the combination of Ellie regret and Carl's loss played perfectly into Sean's pain concerning his own family.
3. What was Ellie's one question for Sean after he explained her surgery?

Answer: "Are you this kind to all your patients?"

Sean replied simply, "You asked me if I ever hurt someone close to me in a way I deeply regret. I'm like you; I want to believe in second chances." It was then clear to Ellie that she'd found someone who really understood what she was struggling against.
4. What body parts did Rhea ask Christian about additional surgeries for?

Answer: nose and lips

Christian went to apologize to Rhea for his poor behavior in the consultation, explaining that he, too, was a Carver victim and that he found it difficult to see how she was dealing with the attack so positively. Rhea quickly changed the subject and asked Christian if it would be possible to make her nose "prettier" and plump up her lips since she'd be under anesthesia anyway. Christian looked disgusted by Rhea's attempt to benefit from the attack by getting elective surgeries and told her they should wait to discuss those at a later time. Christian then went to tell Quentin that he suspected Rhea was not a Carver victim at all, but had inflicted her wounds herself.
5. What did Sean attribute Annie's bruises to?

Answer: soccer

Sean was upset that the social workers were even in the house, but when they questioned the source of Annie's bruises, he exploded at them, calling them morons and ordering them out of the house. This, of course, only made the situation worse, and Julia had to come pick Annie up because, until Matt's restraining order was lifted or Sean completed anger management, Annie couldn't be left alone with her father.
6. What instrument did Christian, Quentin and Liz think had been used to hurt Rhea?

Answer: serrated knife

Liz observed that the Carver never used a serrated knife before because he had always been concerned with precision. Christian reiterated his theory that the Carver hadn't been involved in creating Rhea's wounds, though Quentin still refused to buy into Christian's ideas.

As they continued with the surgery, Rhea's voice expressed the shock and pain that she felt, as the anesthesia didn't have the expected result on her. When in recovery, she brought a lawsuit against the office on the basis that she had been improperly anesthetized, and, though completely immobilized and unable to communicate, she had experienced all the sensation from the surgery.
7. What did Rhea really use to create her wounds?

Answer: bread knife

Christian was furious when confronted with Rhea's lawsuit. He was incensed that she would try to capitalize on the horrors that real victims (like himself) had been put through. Christian berated Rhea's lawyer, asking if he would "brag to the media about wounds she inflicted on herself, mocking the pain of the real victims." Rhea insisted, "I was a victim here! I felt my surgery!" Christian angrily shot back, "To do what you've done, you couldn't feel anything." Quentin tried to calm him down, but when Rhea against insisted, "I felt it," Christian spat at her, "The only thing you feel is the glare of the limelight you think will validate your own existence." Overwhelmed, Rhea tried to defend herself: "You said I used a grapefruit knife, but I didn't. I used a bread knife, and that pain was nothing compared to how I felt on your table." Having confessed her deception, Rhea tried to explain away the offense, saying "I couldn't take it anymore. Being invisible, like a ghost. I couldn't stand walking into a bar one more time and sitting down and having no one even look at me.

It's not like they think I'm ugly. It's like I'm just not there. That's what really hurts more than anything. So, yeah, cutting my face did hurt, but it also felt so good later, on this other level. People were so unbelievably kind to me when they thought I was a Carver victim."
8. Did Ellie's surgery succeed in getting Carl back?

Answer: no

Carl seemed to remember her a bit, but then he introduced Ellie to his "girlfriend" Trudy. Sean offered to take Ellie to dinner, as a sort of sympathetic consolation prize, but Ellie, seemingly having resigned herself to her fate, said she would stay and visit with Carl and Trudy.
9. Did Matt hit Sean?

Answer: no

Sean invited him to, saying "You hit me. Come on. Come back here, give me your best shot. Pain for pain. Then we'll be even. Come on. Hit me. I'm begging you." Matt approached him slowly, told him, "You're very sad" and walked away. Left alone, Sean pulled a kitchen knife out of a drawer and tried cutting his arm on the theory that experiencing physical pain would somehow help to alleviate his emotional pain.
10. What did the Carver promise to give Rhea?

Answer: real pain

Rhea had just organized a light meal for herself and picked up the tray, but when she turned around it was to find herself face to face with the Carver. She dropped the tray on the floor and fell to her knees, terrified. The Carver assured her, "You've made a mess Rhea, but that's okay because I'm going to give you what you've been wanting all along: real pain." With that, he pulled his arm back to slash her!
