Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the second season, we see how Sherlock and John get out of their predicament with Moriarty at the pool. It starts when Moriarty's phone rings out which fitting song?

Answer: Stayin' Alive

Appropriate choice. There's been a change of plans and Moriarty lets them go. But this isn't the last we see of him in this episode... nor is it the last time we hear that ringtone.
2. Sherlock is pulled off a case and shows up in Buckingham Palace wearing what?

Answer: A bedsheet

Only Sherlock would go to meet (possibly) the Queen wearing no pants. Mycroft tells him of his "assignment" to find the photos taken by dominatrix Irene Adler.

In a nod to the original stories, early in the episode, Sherlock puts on a deerstalker cap to get away from the cameras; someone gets his picture and that's the photo that everyone sees. Even though he doesn't wear a hat. While Doyle's Holmes rarely wears a deerstalker in the stories, that image is the one that stays in the public's memory. Just like in the episode. Clever, huh?
3. Who says this to Sherlock at the Christmas party? "You always say such horrible things."

Answer: Molly

Sherlock has been deducing some rather unflattering things about Molly and then realizes that the person she had dressed up for was him. He apologizes and gives her a kiss; Watson is shocked. Things are changing: Sherlock's finally cluing into the hurt that other people feel.
4. In "The Hounds of Baskerville", Sherlock goes through case withdrawal and needs nicotine to cope with the lack of work. What does he offer John in exchange for cigarettes?

Answer: Next week's lottery numbers

It doesn't work. Thankfully, Henry comes by later with a case for him that will take up the bulk of the episode. That's when John gives up the cigarettes that Sherlock no longer needs. Still, I wonder, could Sherlock have deduced the numbers?
5. The day after he sees the hound, Sherlock says to John, "I don't have friends." What does he say next?

Answer: "I've just got one."

It takes him a lot of willpower to admit that he sees Watson as his only friend. The previous night, when Sherlock says he doesn't have friends, Watson says, "I wonder why." Season two definitely brings changes to Sherlock.
6. At the end on the moor, the H.O.U.N.D. approaches and takes off its mask. Who does Sherlock see?

Answer: Moriarty

In updating this story to the 21st century, they made the hound a H.O.U.N.D., a drug that makes people hallucinate what they fear through suggestion. The drug is in the fog, which makes an appearance in the novel. Henry sees a full-size version of the hound whose picture was on the shirt of the man who killed his father. Sherlock sees both the dog and Moriarty, his great enemy.
7. When Moriarty is arrested for three simultaneous crimes, what is he doing?

Answer: Wearing the crown jewels

He lets his arrest happen because he knows he can force an acquittal. Moriarty is played by Andrew Scott, who was in "Band of Brothers".
8. Who first brings the idea to Lestrade that Sherlock might be a fraud and might take part in the crimes he solves?

Answer: Donovan

In the very first episode, Donovan tells Watson that she thinks that Sherlock will commit a crime one day. Lestrade doesn't believe it but has to follow up on her suspicions. Even though it's highly unlikely that Sherlock could start dozens of crimes and solve them without getting caught, once the media latches onto the idea, it's hard to shake off (as Moriarty says in the taxi). Lestrade's superior is not happy that Lestrade has been letting a private investigator have confidential police information.
9. Four assassins relocate to Baker Street. What are they there to do?

Answer: Protect Sherlock

Each assassin who saves him dies. Moriarty can't let Sherlock die until he's gotten everything set up right.
10. If Sherlock doesn't jump off the roof, Moriarty will have three people Sherlock holds dear killed. Who is not one of them?

Answer: Molly

Apparently Moriarty doesn't see Sherlock and Molly as close, which can definitely work in Sherlock's favor. But we certainly know that Sherlock cares about Mrs. Hudson: when a man hits her in "A Scandal in Belgravia", Sherlock throws him out the window.

So he jumps and appears to die, sending John back to therapy. But we see at the end that he's not really dead.
