Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Shining Vale" premiered in March of 2022. What cable network did it premier on?

Answer: Starz

The pilot episode was entitled, "Welcome to Casa De Phelps" and first aired on March 6th, 2022. The series stars Courtney Cox, who also produced the show. The show was about the Phelps family who moved to a new home for a fresh start. Courtney's character, Pat, was a writer looking to get her creativity back on track. She had written a successful book 17 years prior, but nothing since then.

Starz was launched in the early 1990s. Over the years, it has had many original series. One of my favorites is the series "Heels". "Heels," tells the story of a family of professional wrestlers in a small town. Starz has been the platform for a great many major Hollywood first-run feature films releases.
2. The Phelps family was looking for a new start. What was the reason behind their move to the new home?

Answer: Pat had an affair with the handyman.

Patricia, or as she was more commonly referred to, Pat, had an affair with the handyman. The Phelps had hired Frank, the handyman, to fix their kitchen faucet. Pat, through her own admissions, was feeling lonely in the family's tiny apartment. She said Terry was always working and the kids were teens who ignored her.

These were the reasons why Pat claimed she had the affair in the first place. Terry was quite upset that his wife had an affair but seemed just as upset that Frank did not fix the faucet. Terry was also under the impression that Pat had only been with Frank one time.

This was proved to be false, as discovered later on.
3. Courtney Cox played the role of Patricia Phelps wonderfully. Who played her husband Terry in this Starz series?

Answer: Greg Kinnear

Terry and Pat were both in therapy to help with their marital issues. They were mainly trying to work through the issues of Pat's affair. Terry seemed to have found a therapeutic outlet in chopping wood for the fireplace at their new home. Terry genuinely seemed to want to forgive his wife and move on from the affair. It was clear however he was still very upset with her over her indiscretion.

Greg Kinnear was the comedic relief in this series. He tried to use humor to ease the stress the family was going through. Greg Kinnear had starred in one of my all-time favorite films, "As Good As It Gets". He played the role of Simon, a gay artist who was physically assaulted and robbed by a group of thugs. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award, but sadly he did not win.
4. Terry and Pat had two children, Gaynor and Jake. They also had a dog named what?

Answer: Roxy

Roxy was the Phelps' family dog. She seemed to have a real problem with pooping in the house. The first night the family was dining in the home, Gaynor told her mom Roxy had just pooped on the floor. Pat was upset because she had just taken Roxy out to relieve herself a short time ago. Roxy was definitely closest to Pat as she is always by her side.

The series has paid homage to Stephen King's "The Shining" in several scenes of several different episodes. In the pilot, a ball was seen rolling towards Pat in her attic annex from out of nowhere. Roxy was of course there and wanted to play. Pat rolled the ball for her dog to fetch it. This was very reminiscent of the scene in "The Shining". In the film, Danny Torrance was playing in the hall with his toy cars and trucks. Out of nowhere, a ball came rolling towards Danny. Danny looked up and there was no one there.
5. The family was driving to their new home. Pat saw a little girl run in front of their car. What animal did Terry tell Pat that she probably saw?

Answer: Deer

Pat screamed at Terry as he was driving to stop their vehicle. She had seen a little girl chase a ball in front of their car. Pat was sure they had hit the little girl. The family was visibly shaken all except Jake, of course. He was not aware the family had just skidded down the road. Terry and Pat got out of the car and saw no signs of anything or anyone being hit or hurt. Terry explained that Pat most likely had seen a deer. Even though Pat said it was a girl wearing a dress and had ribbons in her hair. Terry said she probably thought the antlers were ribbons. Terry would use the deer explanation for a lot of scenarios throughout the episode.

In the scene, where Pat was outside taking Roxy to use the bathroom at night she saw two shining lights. Pat was visibly scared and screamed. Suddenly the outside floodlights came on, it was a deer. This was one of the funny light-hearted moments of the episode. Roxy had also successfully pooped outside. Pat was feeling really good as she walked back inside her home.
6. The relationship between mother and daughter seemed strained at times. What did Gaynor do on her first day of school that upset her mom?

Answer: Gaynor was wearing clothes that were way too inappropriate.

Gaynor seemed to have great disdain for her mother. Pat seemed to share the same feeling about her daughter. The two were almost always at odds with one another. Gaynor was always throwing it in her mother's face that she had an affair. She was constantly belittling her mother who was trying to make their relationship better. Gaynor had come down the steps dressed in very short shorts and a t-shirt.

After a battle of words with her daughter, Pat finally demanded Gaynor change her clothes to a proper outfit for school. Gaynor was later seen with her mom and Jake at the bus stop.

She was dressed in a school uniform.
7. Jake was the youngest child of Pat and Terry. Most of the time, he seemed to be unaware of what was going on around him. What did Jake forget to put on for his first day at his new school?

Answer: Shoes

Pat had made lunch for her two children. Gaynor came downstairs from her room first. Jake came down without his shoes on. His mom asked him where his shoes were. Jake looked down and realized he had forgotten to put them on. Pat handed Jake and Gaynor their lunches. Jake was upset that his mother had cut the crust off of his sandwich.

After an argument ensued with his mom about his lunch, Jake finally went upstairs and put his footwear on.
8. Pat was beginning to suspect their new home was haunted. What did Pat see that confirmed her suspicions?

Answer: A ghost floating outside their family room window.

The family had just finished their first dinner in their new home. The kids had gone upstairs and Terry had suggested they make love. He said it had been three months since the last time. Pat seemed almost put off by this request. She told Terry to go upstairs and she would be up shortly. Pat was cleaning up after dinner. She heard the playing of their broken piano in the family room. Pat had thought it was her husband who had played the piano while in college. She went into the family room to see if it was Terry who was playing the piano. It was not Terry and there was no one there.

She heard three taps at the window and pulled back the curtains of the window. She saw the ghost floating outside her window. It was the ghost of a housewife that had previously lived in the family's new home. Pat screamed and ran upstairs to get Terry. This was the first of many times Pat would see what she thought at the time was a ghost.
9. The Phelps family had moved from Brooklyn. In what state was Shining Vale?

Answer: Connecticut

According to the roadside sign, Shining Vale had been established in 1786. The family had a self-professed tiny apartment in Brooklyn. Pat and Terry had purchased a large home in Connecticut. Terry was especially proud because they had got the home $200k under the asking price. The family seemed to quickly adapt to their new home and state.
10. "Shining Vale" was written and created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan. Who directed the pilot episode "Welcome to Casa De Phelps"?

Answer: Dearbhla Walsh

Dearbhla Walsh had directed a great many hit series in the United Kingdom. She has worked on that country's version of "Shameless", the television series. She had also worked on the series, "Eastenders" and "The Tudors". Dearbhla Walsh, in my opinion, did a wonderful job in setting the tone for this wonderful series.

She exquisitely combined both the aspects of horror and comedy in the pilot episode. The series to me almost has a feeling of campiness to it as well.
