Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which "St. Elsewhere" physician was played by David Birney?

Answer: Dr. Ben Samuels

Though he was considered one of the show's major stars when it premiered, Birney lasted just one season.
2. What was the first name of Dr. Mark Craig's son?

Answer: Stephen

The only child of Dr. Craig and his wife Ellen, Stephen was killed in a car crash in season 4.
3. For how many of "St. Elsewhere's" six seasons did Denzel Washington play Dr. Phil Chandler?

Answer: 6

In fact, Washington remained in the cast up until the next-to-last episode, when Chandler not only left St. Eligius, but quit the medical profession altogether.
4. Which young relative of a "St. Elsewhere" doctor was autistic?

Answer: Tommy Westphall

In a strange twist, the final episode "revealed" that the entire series had supposedly been a fantasy in this character's mind. I know I'm in the minority, but I hated this ending!
5. When St. Eligius founder Father Joseph McCabe returned to the hospital after many years, from what ailment was he suffering?

Answer: Lou Gehrig's Disease

Officially known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Fr. McCabe was played by veteran TV actor Edward Herrmann.
6. How many times was Dr. Victor Ehrlich married?

Answer: 2

The often obnoxious Ehrlich was played by Ed Begley Jr. His wives were Roberta Sloan (season 2) and Lucy Papandrao (season 6).
7. Where was Dr. Peter White shot, and who did the deed?

Answer: Morgue--Shirley Daniels

As rapist Peter would later "admit" in Jack Morrison's nightmare in the "Sweet Dreams" episode, "I deserved it."
8. Which actress would later play her "St. Elsewhere" character on an episode of "Homicide: Life on the Street"?

Answer: Alfre Woodard

Originally an idealistic obstetrician, an older, more cynical Dr. Roxanne Turner was accused of "mercy killing" several patients in the 1998 "Homicide" episode "Mercy."
9. In the season 3 episode "Sweet Dreams," which character's dream/fantasy was a parody of the ZZ Top video "Legs"?

Answer: Luther Hawkins

This scene was hilarious. Hospital orderly (and later, paramedic) Luther was played by Eric Laneuville.
10. What was the medical specialty of Dr. Bobby Caldwell?

Answer: Plastic Surgery

Played by Mark Harmon, Caldwell became one of the first TV characters to contract the AIDS virus. He left St. Eligius and later died offscreen.
11. What future movie star portrayed Clancy Williams, the girlfriend of Dr. Jack Morrison?

Answer: Helen Hunt

The couple broke up (and Hunt left the series) after Clancy decided to abort Jack's baby. David Morse (Morrison) was most recently seen in the CBS series "Hack."
12. In the two-part episode "Time Heals," what anniversary was the hospital celebrating in the present-day scenes?

Answer: 50th

This imaginative episode also featured "flashbacks" to significant events in St. Eligius' history from 1935 to 1985.
13. Speaking of "Time Heals," which regular cast member played his character's own father in "flashback" scenes in that episode?

Answer: Ed Flanders

In addition to his usual role as Dr. Donald Westphall, Flanders also portrayed his dad, Thomas, in scenes set in 1935.
14. Who did Dr. Wayne Fiscus NOT date?

Answer: Dr. Annie Cavanero

Not that he didn't try...Fiscus was memorably portrayed by comedian Howie Mandel. Actress Cynthia Sikes (Cavanero) left the show after season 3.
15. Which physician died in the very last episode of "St. Elsewhere"?

Answer: Dr. Daniel Auschlander

Weakened by the liver cancer from which he suffered throughout the series, the elderly Auschlander finally succumbed to a stroke.
