While playing Sherlock Holmes on the holodeck, Data found it too easy to solve the mysteries. He and Geordi asked the computer to create a mystery with a character capable of defeating Data. Moriarty was so smart that not only did he kidnap Dr. Pulaski from under Data's nose, but he figured out that he was a hologram and took control of the system.

It was only after he was convinced that there was no way for him to leave the holodeck that he gave up control.
