Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the officers has an alien lifeform that has attached itself to your patient. The alien is slowly killing your patient as it uses her body's systems to keep itself alive. You're thousands of lightyears away from help, what do you do?

Answer: Create a holographic doctor of a mass murderer.

"Voy" episode "Nothing Human" - The Doctor creates a holographic representation of Crell Moset, a Cardassian who made many headways into medical research. Oh, he also killed a lot of Bajorans in the process. Torres refuses to be treated by this hologram and one of the members of the crew is mad because members of his family died at Moset's hands.

In the end, Moset is able to save Torres, but then his program is ultimately deleted.
This story is a great parallel to what happened in Nazi Germany during World War II.

There were horrible experiments performed on prisoners, but those experiments provided valuable scientific information. The dilemma is should that knowledge be used so those people did not die in vain, or should it be destroyed as the knowledge was obtained in an extremely unethical manner?
2. When the ship carrying the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire is damaged and the Chancellor himself is severely wounded, what do you do?

Answer: Beam aboard and see if you can help.

"Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" McCoy and Kirk beamed over to try and help. However, Chancellor Gorkon was beyond McCoy's help and the two Starfleet officers were taken into custody, tried and convicted of murdering the Chancellor.
3. One of your crewmembers is wounded and the only way to save him is to grow a clone, but the clone would have to die in order for you to save the crewmember. Do you make the clone or not?

Answer: Clone - the ship needs the crewmember.

"Enterprise" episode "Similitude" Phlox had to grow some neural tissue for Trip using a Lyssarrian Desert Larvae. The symbiot (nicknamed Sim) grew quickly from a baby to an adult. However, matters are complicated when it is determined that Sim would have to die in order for the neural tissue to be harvested.

Although his lifespan would only have been 15 days, Phlox only had a short window in which to do the transplant - and this would shorten Sim's life.
4. The ship's counselor is being killed by a man who is using her as a 'receptacle' for his bad thoughts. What do you do?

Answer: "Kill" the counselor for a short time so the link may be broken.

"TNG" episode "Man of the People" Alkar's other receptacle died en route to the negotiations he was supposed to be doing, so he decided to use Troi. However, she aged far faster than others he had used, and she would die soon if the link was not severed.

The only choice, according to Dr. Crusher, was to 'kill' Deanna for a short time that would make Alkar stop using her. While he was not connected to another, then it would be possible to arrest him. Had they just killed Alkar outright, the rush of emotions might have killed Deanna (besides, it's a bit unethical).
5. When the mother of one of the crew is going through a physiological phase and decides to marry the captain, what should you do?

Answer: Nothing - 'an animal is at his best when hunted'.

"TNG" episode "Manhunt" Deanna's mother was going through "the phase" when a Betazoid woman's sex drive quadruples - or more. When Pulaski tells Deanna that Mrs. Troi was going to Picard's quarters for dinner, Deanna asks if she shouldn't warn the captain. Pulaski replies that "an animal is at its best when hunted" while Troi replies with "...or hunting."
6. When confronted with multiple casualties aboard a ship, what is the general consensus of how you should proceed?

Answer: Triage - treat those who are worse off (but will live) first.

"Voy" episode "Author, Author" In the Doctor's holonovel ("Photons Be Free"), Paris plays the part of the EMH and begins to triage. But, as this is the 'evil version' of the ship, he is told to take care of Lieutenant Marseille, the pilot, first and then those who are hurt the most.

When he refuses to comply, the captain of the holonovel kills the most-injured crewman so he has no excuse not to treat the pilot.
"Voy" episode "Critical Care" The Doctor is brought aboard a medical facility run by a bureaucrat who believes those who contribute most to society should get the best treatment, even if it means those worse off die.

The Doctor rebels and begins sneaking the 'lower class' patients the medicine they need in order to survive.
7. Your empathic friend just lost her empathic abilities. Although you will try your best to find out what's wrong and fix it, what advice do you give her?

Answer: Talk to someone with psychological training.

"TNG" episode "The Loss" Troi lost her empathic sense and was pretty awful to Dr. Crusher by blaming her for not having tried hard enough to find a cure. Crusher, for her part, told Troi to talk to someone with psychological training and tried to impress upon the half-Betazoid that the damage may be permanent.
8. Borg are attempting to enter sickbay! How do you create a diversion that would give everyone a headstart so they can try to outrun these creatures?

Answer: Turn on the EMH - tell him to stall for time.

"Star Trek: First Contact" Crusher turns on the EMH and when the Borg enter, the EMH begins asking if they would like an analgesic as Borg implants irritate the skin.
9. Your captain's extremely stressed, doesn't eat properly and doesn't sleep enough. And now she's complaining of these terrible headaches that won't go away. According to "Scientific Method," what is the best way to get her feeling more relaxed?

Answer: Give her a massage.

"Voy" episode "Scientific Method" The first scene after the opening credits is Janeway getting a massage from the Doctor. She asks if he could just give her a hypospray. The EMH replies that he could, but the headache would just come back as she abuses her body so much - and sometimes there is no substitute for a good, long massage.
10. Your captain is injured and needs to take time off to recuperate. Can you relieve your captain of duty?

Answer: Yes - in these cases, you can override the captain's decision.

Many episodes in the "Star Trek" world show this including the "Voy" episode "Year of Hell" when the Doctor orders Janeway to stay in sickbay. She refuses and asks the Doctor how he intends to enforce this order as there is no one who can be spared to guard her. In "Star Trek: TNG," Crusher was able to convince Picard to go to Risa as she would have had to relieve him of duty otherwise.
