Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 7, teams departed from Sri Lanka and flew to what large Italian city?

Answer: Rome

Ripping open their clues at the Mount Lavinia Hotel in Mount Lavinia, teams were told that they would be leaving Sri Lanka and that they had to go to a nearby travel agency to book tickets on the next available flight to the Eternal City, a location they would need to determine to be Rome, Italy.

The seven teams flying to Italy all made it onto the same flight, but seating arrangements on the aircraft proved useful; only the four front-running teams were able to leave the airport first. They all headed to Hadrian's Bridge in Rome for their next clue.
2. Which team was required to complete a Speed Bump task in Leg 7, delivering a typewriter to a local landmark?

Answer: Caroline and Jennifer

Arriving at Hadrian's Bridge, Caroline and Jennifer found their Speed Bump task, a required extra task they had to complete because they placed last in the prior non-elimination leg in Sri Lanka. For their extra task, the girls had to proceed to the Parthenon in Rome to collect a heavy Olivetti typewriter.

Then, they had to deliver it on foot to a local building known as 'The Typewriter', Altare della Patria. Once they did this, they could continue on with their Detour task.
3. Which team completed the 'Gladiator' Detour task in Italy in Leg 7?

Answer: Leo and Jamal

Heading out from Hadrian's Bridge, the seven teams had to complete a Detour task-- either 'Gladiator' or 'Charioteer'. In 'Gladiator', completed by Jessica and John and Leo and Jamal, the teams had to learn a choreographed fight and properly execute it against a Roman gladiator.

In 'Charioteer', teams needed to race horses and carts around a track, completing five laps in a minute and thirty seconds; one team member controlled the speed of the cart while one steered it. The other five teams completed this one.
4. During the Road Block in Leg 7, teams needed to determine a lengthy number and write it in which location?

Answer: On the back of a postcard

After the Detour, teams were told a cryptic clue: "Piazza of John Keats' unhappy Roman Holiday". From this, they had to glean that their Road Block would be at the Piazza di Spagna, where John Keats died, at the Spanish Steps. Here, one member of each team needed to count the amount of steps on the landmark and add it to the year on the nearby Obelisco Sallustiano.

When they did this, they had to convert the number into Roman Numerals, write it on the back of a postcard, and hand it to a couple on a scooter. Once they got the right answer, MCMXXIV, they could receive their next clue. Brendon, Dave, Jennifer, Jet, Flight Time, Jamal, and John completed this task.
5. Which team was eliminated in Italy in Leg 7?

Answer: Jessica and John

After the Road Block, teams were told to run on foot to the next Pit Stop at Rome's Piazza del Popolo. Brendon and Rachel, whose trip to Italy in "The Amazing Race 20" was less-than-great, ended up reaching the Pit Stop in first place by running a strong, lucky leg.

As such they won a trip to Australia and the Great Barrier Reef courtesy of Travelocity. In the end, a footrace between Leo and Jamal, Flight Time and Big Easy, and Jessica and John resulted in Jessica and John's unfortunate elimination, dropping them from the lead early in the leg to the back of the pack from a horrible taxi ride in the wrong direction.
6. In Leg 8, teams remained in Italy. Their Detour tasks were different in nature, but both contained which common animal?

Answer: Donkey

In Leg 8, teams remained in Italy, but traveled northward, driving themselves from the Pit Stop at the Piazza del Popolo to Civita di Bagnoregio, a small, fortified town about one hundred kilometers away. Upon their arrival, teams found the Detour for this leg, a choice between 'Donkey Run' and 'Donkey Build'.

In 'Donkey Run', teams had to choose two donkeys and ride them in three laps around a track before the end of a time limit. Brendon and Rachel, Leo and Jamal, and Flight Time and Big Easy completed this task while the others finished 'Donkey Build', in which they had to construct a wooden donkey using pieces provided to them before delivering it elsewhere in the town.
7. In the eighth leg of the race, Jet and Cord were required to use their Express Pass or else it would be voided. Did they use it?

Answer: Yes

Arriving at the Detour task, Jet and Cord ended up using their Express Pass at one of the latest possible moments, opting to hand it over to the man holding clues for the 'Donkey Build' option to continue on. As such they did not need to complete the Detour task.

The race's other Express Pass was handed off to Caroline and Jennifer in Leg 2 (in Guangzhou, China); it was used during the Detour in the same leg to prevent them from falling too far behind the pack.
8. How many teams were forced into completing a U-Turn in Italy in Leg 8?

Answer: Two

After the Detour task, teams were told to proceed on foot to the Hostaria del Ponte, a nearby restaurant in Bagnoregio, where they would be able to attend to the Double U-Turn awaiting them in this leg. Here, to maintain their lead, Brendon and Rachel U-Turned the nearest team, Dave and Connor, forcing them to finish the 'Donkey Build' Detour task.

In an attempt to stay ahead of the trailing teams, Dave and Connor also U-Turned Leo and Jamal (who received their record-breaking third U-Turn) to do the same.
9. Which team member did not complete the calligraphy Road Block in Italy in Leg 8?

Answer: Dave

After the Detour, teams were told to drive to La Badia di Orvieto in the town of Orvieto, Italy. Here, at the old church, teams located their Road Block task, where one member had to 'have the write stuff'. The selected team members-- Rachel, Jet, Connor, Caroline, Leo, and Flight Time-- were required to copy a page of calligraphy and then gold-leaf part of the page to the approval of a local priest.

When this was done, they could carry on to the Pit Stop.
10. Which team was eliminated in Italy in Leg 8?

Answer: Flight Time and Big Easy

After the Road Block, teams drove themselves deeper into Orvieto to find the Piazza del Duomo. Taking a funicular up to the building and stepping on the mat, Brendon and Rachel took their second victory in a row (and third altogether), winning $7,500 each.

After taking too much time to find their tasks and having Detour troubles, Flight Time and Big Easy were unable to pull out of their fifth consecutive sixth-place finish. They were eliminated upon their arrival.
