Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the title of this very first "Peanuts" Christmas special?

Answer: "A Charlie Brown Christmas"

This short animated films revolves around Charlie Brown trying to find the true meaning of Christmas while feeling depressed about the commercialism surrounding the holidays. Invited to direct the gang's Christmas play, he struggles to fill his role and inspire the other kids to find true holiday spirit.
2. When was the film originally aired?

Answer: 1965

It was first aired on December 9th, 1965, on US television. It has since been shown widely around the world as well.
3. Who was the film's musical director?

Answer: Vince Guaraldi

American jazz musician Vince Guaraldi conducted the music, played piano and composed the original score. Guaraldi composed the score for sixteen "Peanuts" television specials and the feature film "A Boy Named Charlie Brown".
4. Which of these songs does not occur in the film?

Answer: "Silent Night"

The soundtrack has been immensely popular. Vince Guaraldi's sudden death in 1976 at the age of 47 was a big blow to the "Peanuts" television team which included Charles Schulz (creator of "Peanuts"), Lee Mendelson (long-time producer of the "Peanuts" specials) and Bill Meléndez (animator).
5. Which kid complains of always ending up playing a shepherd?

Answer: Shermy

I bet he's not the only one. Shermy was one of the original gang, and in fact delivered the first bit of dialogue on the strip. He was gradually seen less frequently and by the early '70s he'd altogether disappeared from the strip.
6. Who invited Charlie Brown to direct the Christmas play?

Answer: Lucy

Believe it or not, Lucy shows some holiday spirit and attempts to cheer up Charlie Brown by getting him on board. Although her wanting to be made Christmas Queen may have something to do with it...
7. Who does Lucy claim runs the Christmas racket?

Answer: A big Eastern syndicate

"Look, Charlie, let's face it: we all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It's run by a big Eastern syndicate, you know."
8. Which song does Lucy ask Schroeder to play on the piano?

Answer: "Jingle Bells"

As per usual, she doesn't think he quite gets it. Poor Schroeder and his piano. Lucy's unrequited obsession with music genius Schroeder is a central theme in both the strip and the TV specials.
9. Who accompanies Charlie Brown to the Christmas tree sale?

Answer: Linus

Linus often seems to be the only person who really understands Charlie Brown. He provides some stoic balance to Charlie Brown's pessimism. Linus is the philosopher of the gang.
10. How does Linus respond when Charlie Brown asks if anyone knows what Christmas is all about?

Answer: By reciting the Gospel of Luke

Linus takes centre stage to tell the gang the story of the nativity. This is probably the most famous moment of the Christmas special. Charles 'Sparky' Schulz was deeply religious as a child and young man, but later in life classified himself as a secular humanist.
