Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ruth told Miss Marple that she and her sister Carrie Louise had been married how many times between them?

Answer: 6

Carrie Louise was presently married to Lewis Serrocold, and the future murder victim was her step-son, who was older than she was, the son of her first husband.
2. When Ruth and Miss Marple went backstage to see Alex, what did the sign to their right read?

Answer: 'dressing rooms'

Alex was Stephen's brother - Stephen was one of the workers at Stoneygates rehabilitation centre for young offenders. It was a combination of Alex's London play and Chief Inspector Slack's hobby which helped Miss Marple discover the truth of the murder.
3. Dr Maseryk was the psychologist on staff at Stoneygates - where did he come from?

Answer: Vienna

Carrie Louise tells Miss Marple that Hitler was responsible for many fine brains coming to England - mostly Jewish. Like Dr Maseryk, they escaped the Nazi regime and fled to England, the USA and other freer countries.
4. Who broke up the fight which ensued on stage between the boys who were rehearsing Romeo and Juliet?

Answer: Walter

Stephen did not realise they were fighting for real - he thought they were rehearsing the fight scene at the start of the play. The look on his face when Walter showed him that the knife they were fighting with was not a stage prop was priceless!
5. Why did Mildred prepare the Music Room for Christian when he wrote to say he was coming to stay?

Answer: he didn't like stairs

There was great excitement that Christian was coming; he came three or four times a year and was clearly very fond of Carrie Louise.
6. What was the postman's mode of transport?

Answer: bicycle

We do not see Stoneygates as being too close to a town or village. When Miss Marple arrived Gina brought her from the train station in her car, and during that journey she is telling her about the institution and her family, so they were some distance from the station as well.
7. Chief Inspector Slack was practicing his magic tricks when the news came of a death at Stoneygates. He was working towards the area championships - how much time did he have before the competition?

Answer: three weeks

It was when Miss Marple found the suitcase with the tricks inside that she found the final clue as to how the murderer did the deed - she asked Slack about cutting a woman in half, or having one person becoming two - 'They do it with mirrors'.
8. Who told Carrie Louise that someone was trying to poison her?

Answer: Miss Marple

Lewis arranged things so Slack would find out about the poisoning, and then asked that Carrie Louise not be told about it. Once she discovered the identity of the murderer, Miss Marple told her friend that arsenic had been administered for some time.
9. What happened to the murderer?

Answer: he drowned

The murderer had involved someone else in the deed, and when that person went to kill himself, the murderer tried to save him. It did not work, and both drowned.
10. What was the last thing Chief Inspector Slack said to Miss Marple in this story?

Answer: 'Thank you'

As the Miss Marple series goes on, Inspector Slack has had a love-hate relationship with Miss Marple; at the close of this case he is coming to terms with the fact that they can work together. Near the close of the programme, when Miss Marple tells him she knows the identity of the murderer, but not how it was done, he is gracious and says, 'Would you mind waiting for me in my office, Miss Marple?'
