I was quite surprised when I learned Matthew Ashford was not the original Jack. The character arrived in Salem in 1987 but Matt didn't take over the role until after 2 other actors took a stab at it in 1987. He played Jack off and on over the years with a couple of others also filling it for short periods.

He returned in early 2001 and the character was thought to be killed by the Salem stalker in 2003. He returned in 2004 and left again in 2007, and returned once again for the 2011-2012 time period.
