Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist Quiz

The game begins with a prologue, which is a catchy little tune sung by Al Lowe about the history of Freddy Pharkas. The first line in the song says he was born in St. Louis.

Freddy Pharkas began his life as a gunslinger. However, then he met Kenny the Kid, who outdrew him and shot his ear off. He then gave up gunslinging and became a pharmacist.

Answer: Penelope

Penelope is a school teacher. Freddy is in love with her, but he is afraid to tell her what he used to be.

Answer: Whittlin' Willie

Whittlin' Willie is an old man who smokes a pipe. He spends most of the game in Chester Field's shop, but somehow he can see everything that Freddy does. At the beginning of the game he says "Freddy Pharkas? You was asking about Freddy Pharkas? The man what saved Coarsegold, only nobody knew it was him? Well, just hop on old Whittlin' Willie's lap and I will tell you all about it." You will hear him say that, and you will hear him speak several times throughout the game, and you will hear him tell the ending of the story. How the story ends is up to you. If you make Freddy die, Willie will tell about how Freddy died.

The "Leisure Suit Larry" narrator was also the narrator of "Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist."

Gary Owens was the "Space Quest" narrator. John Rhys-Davies was the "Quest For Glory 4" narrator. Michael Shapiro was the voice of Torin and Boogle in "Torin's Passage."

Answer: The pharmacy gets closed down

If you look around the town of Coarsegold (where the game takes place) you will see that many businesses have been closed down for no reason. Obviously something is fishy in the town of Coarsegold. Unfortunately, Freddy's business ends up like those other businesses, closed down for no real reason.

Answer: Horses have excess gas

Someone put something gassy in the horses' food. If nothing is done, the whole town will die from the fumes! Fortunately, Freddy is a pharmacist, and he conjures up a medication that deals with excess gas.

Answer: Snails

This game is meant to be funny and ridiculous. An army of snails gathers outside of town, prepared to slime all the occupants of Coarsegold to death. Freddy kills them by using beer to lure them into the river, where they move like lemmings, a reference to the classic game "Lemmings."

Answer: He refuses to harm the ants

Srini is from India, a country that believes that every living being is sacred. He can't get off the anthill without harming a lot of ants and he refuses to do that. Freddy must steal a ladder from the slide at the school to help Srini down. This is one of the worst puzzles ever in my opinion, and it's made even worse that the ladder is not highly pixelated like an important item should be.

Answer: Dysentery

Someone poisons the town's water supply and everyone rushes to the outhouse. Fortunately, there is a heroic pharmacist in town.

Answer: Death

There is no need to go to the screen with the swamp at any point in the game. All you can do there is drown, with Freddy humorously saying "Could I have misjudged the surface tension?" right before he sinks.

Answer: Cedric

After you've helped Srini down from the anthill, the next thing you will see when you go to the anthill screen is Cedric from "King's Quest 5", along with two vultures. The narrator implies that Graham is out in the desert and Cedric is waiting for him to return to Serenia, and the two vultures are waiting for Graham to die so they can eat him. One of those two things happens in "King's Quest 5" depending on how the player plays. You have to return to this screen while Cedric is here, because Freddy left his ladder here and he needs it back. You can also get Freddy to tell the vultures to leave Cedric alone.

Answer: Fire

The building next to the pharmacy, which is also Freddy's home, is on fire. Freddy puts it out using baking soda and a see-saw. Neil Ross says "What a ridiculous solution. And yet you thought of it." I personally do not think that solution is as ridiculous as the church key or using the ladder to help Srini from the anthill.

Answer: The sheriff and the banker

The sheriff had been an obvious suspect for the whole game, seeing as he closed down businesses for no real reason and doesn't even try to stop the plagues on his town. The banker was a less obvious suspect, but if you go visit him and speak to him, you find that he is not a nice guy.

Answer: Madame Ovarie

Madame Ovarie warns Freddy that the sheriff and the banker are out to get him and that he must either leave town or become a gunslinger again. Freddy chooses the latter.
