Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What food in drink do you have to steal from the restaurant and give to the sheriff so that he can help you?

Answer: Pie and coffee

During act 3 and only act 3, Mom's Cafe has a coffee machine available on one of the tables. The coffee is free. To get the pie, you have to do some work. You have to take some horse poop on the ground and out it on the floor of Mom's Cafe. This will get Mom to call Hop Singh so he'll clean it up, and it will get him out of the kitchen so you can steal his pie. Give both of these to the sheriff, and he'll give you some bullets and a gun-cleaning kit.

He'd prefer not to help you, but he'll do whatever it takes to get you out of town.
2. Freddy's best friend died a few days before the events of the game began. What was his name?

Answer: Philip D. Graves

Freddy had filled a prescriptions for Philip just days before his death. Freddy realizes that he probably botched the prescription and that's what killed Philip. Freddy had entrusted his bank safety deposit box key to Philip. Freddy's safe deposit box contained his gun, which he never wanted to use again. But, now that there is clearly some bad trouble in Coarsegold, Freddy realizes he needs his gun again. So he goes to ReBoot Hill, digs up Philip's grave, and gets the key.
3. Talking to which character after Act I will bring up a menu that will give two options, one of which will end the game?

Answer: The banker

When the sheriff closes down your pharmacy, the banker offers to give you the value of the pharmacy in cash if you talk to him. You can either accept the cash, leave town, and give up hope of being a hero, or you can refuse the offer and become a hero. If you choose the former option, you lose the game, and Willie gives you some angry closing remarks on the story of Freddy Pharkas.

Interestingly, the bank is closed in act 4.
4. This game has an up-tempo western version of which popular kid's song?

Answer: Mary Had a Little Lamb

In the bar, you will sometimes hear a fun version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" complete with some dancing sheep onstage. Even if you ask the pianist to play a different song, the sheep will continue to dance no matter what song you ask them to play.
5. Who helps Freddy practice shooting?

Answer: Srini

Srini, Freddy's new Indian companion tosses bottles in the air so that Freddy can shoot them. This is one of three mini-games in the game.
6. Hop Singh is related to what character from another Sierra game?

Answer: Lo Fat

Lo Fat owns the laundromat in "Laura Bow 2: The Dagger of Amon Ra". Hop Singh is his cousin. There is another similarity to "Laura Bow 2" in terms of voice acting. Salvatore sounds a lot like Detective O'Riley. It's never revealed whether or not those two characters are related.
7. What businesses are closed down at the beginning of act 4?

Answer: Mom's Cafe and Chester Field's Mercantile

The sheriff closes yet another business down at the beginning of act 4. This time's it's a business you never have to go to again: Mom's Cafe. If you go to the anthill at the beginning of act 4, you can see Hop Singh slowly walking out of town. You can talk to him and learn what happened.

Normally, when you go into Chester Field's Mercantile, you will hear Chester say "Help yourself. I will be right out" but then he never comes out. You can talk to Whittlin' Willie there. In act 3, Willie will tell Freddy how to do a lost wax casting so he can create a fake ear to disguise the one he lost. Freddy wants to save the town, but he also wants people to think that he left town. To accomplish both of these tasks, he spends the end of act 3 trying to disguise himself. In act 4, the mercantile has closed down, but this means that we can finally see Chester. He's wandering around in front of the bar with a sandwich board.
8. An ancestor of which popular Sierra character appears in this game?

Answer: Leisure Suit Larry

Zircon Jim Laffer makes a couple of appearances in this game. First, you can see him in the outhouse (the one that has all its walls) in act 2, before the whole town gets dysentery. He will say "Sorry, this stall is occupewed." He will look like Leisure Suit Larry, he will sound exactly like Leisure Suit Larry (since it's the same voice actor) and you will here a western version of the "Leisure Suit Larry" theme song.

In act 4, he will be in the bar. There is an anachronism here. If you look at him, the narrator says that his brother will give birth to a son, who will give birth to a son, who will give birth to a son, who will give birth to Leisure Suit Larry. This would make Zircon Jim Larry's great great great uncle. However, the game says that Jim is Larry's great great grandfather. So, there's an error somewhere in that script.

If you try to shoot Jim, the narrator says that's a great idea, but then Larry will never be born and that will create some real problems. So most of the dialogue suggest that Jim is Larry's great great grandfather, which would mean that it wasn't his brother who created the generation that led to Leisure Suit Larry.
9. Someone is cheating at cards. What's his name?

Answer: Wheaton "Aces" Hall

Aces is holding cards in his hands, but the left hand that is holding the cards is a fake hand. His real left hand is under the table, and he's using it to feed good cards into his hand. He also has a gun hidden under the table.

The music for this section is my favorite music in the game, and you can ask the piano player to play it at any time durng the game until you can no longer go into the bar.
10. Hoe do you defeat the card cheater?

Answer: With an indirect gunshot

By this point in the game you should know that the sheriff doesn't care about any of the town's problems. If you try shooting Aces directly, he will outdraw you and he will kill you and Willie will say "So it's not as if Freddy had done any real good.

But it was fun having him around." The townspeople are too scared to help. So to get Aces, you fire your gun at the bar. If you aim it right, the bullet will bounce off the bar and hit the chandelier, which will fall on top of Aces and crush him. If you aim it wrong, the bullet will bounce around elsewhere and it will kill an innocent townsperson, and a text box will pop up saying "Be kind, please rewind" and it'll pretend that never happened (although you kind of wonder why it doesn't do that when Freddy dies).
11. Once the card cheater is defeated, what's the next thing that happens?

Answer: Cowboys shoot up the town

On the streets of Coarsegold outside of the bar and outside of the barber shop, there are several cowboys firing their guns constantly in random directions. If you go on either screen, and you're on the street, you're dead. You have to go somewhere where they won't notice you. You go to the hotel balcony and set a can of laughing gas there. Then you go to a gazebo at shoot the lid off. The cowboys will laugh themselves to death. This is a difficult puzzle, but Srini gives you some hints on how to solve it if you talk to him.

The wrong answers are things that happened in act two.
12. Who comes to Coarsegold and shoots off Freddy's left ear?

Answer: Kenny the Kid

Kenny the Kid, a character who's an obvious combination of Billy the Kid and Sierra CEO Ken Williams, was the person who shot off Freddy's right ear in St. Louis according to the prologue. Near the end of the game, he comes to Coarsegold and shoots off Freddy's left ear (although this time Kenny does not know that it's Freddy since Freddy is in disguise).
13. Who is the main villain of the game?

Answer: Penelope

In a shocking twist that I certainly didn't see coming, Freddy's girlfriend Penelope turns out to be the villain behind all the bad things happening in Coarsegold.

When Penelope moved to Coarsegold to become a teacher, she noticed some oil behind the school. She then realized that Coarsegold was built on an oil well and she wanted all that oil money. She couldn't buy the rights to all the oil on a teacher's salary, so she made some agreements with the banker and the sheriff. They close down all the businesses and give all the land and mineral rights to Penelope, as long as Penelope slept with the banker. She tells all of this to Freddy once she ties him up takes off his silver ear finds that the "handsome silver-eared stranger" is really her former boyfriend. She then sets the place on fire (it flames it quickly with all the oil) and leaves Freddy to die. But, Freddy is able to move around, get his silver ear back, and cut the ropes. Freddy then goes back upstairs and defeats Penelope in a fencing contest. He is just about to kill her, when Kenny walks in. Freddy throws his silver and at Kenny, piercing him and killing him. He then carves an "R" into Penelope's dress, and he leaps from the building just before it explodes. Penelope dies in the fire.
14. What is one thing Willie did after the events of the game are over?

Answer: He found his knife

After Willie told Freddy how to do a lost wax casting, he left the mercantile and left his knife behind. Freddy stole it, used it to do what he needed to do, and then he just threw it somewhere, thinking that Willie will eventually find it. It turns out Freddie was right. No matter where Freddy is when you make him use the knife, Willie will find it. Even if Freddy is in his bedroom, Willie will apparently break into the pharmacy and get his knife back.
15. Fill the blank: "Peerless, _____, and Free"

Answer: Earless

In the closing song, which is the final verse of "The Ballad of Freddy Pharkas," Freddy is described as "Peerless, earless, and free." He's earless because Kenny shot off both his ears. "Fearless" would make sense, but amazingly that's not right. "Beerless" would work since Freddy never drinks any beer during the game, but that's not right either.

It's not clear whether or not he was tearless, seeing as he was very upset when he found out Penelope was the villain. However, it is clear that the word "Tearless" isn't in the song regardless.
