Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which game, first released for home computer use in 1986, required the player to deliver newspapers, with each day of the week being the next level of play?

Answer: "Paperboy"

"Paperboy", by Atari, first appeared in 1984 as an acarde game. Each day of the week was a new level, with the aim to get through all seven levels and obtain a high score as possible through successful deliveries to subscribers. There were many obstacles to avoid including cars, skateboards, joggers and even the Grim Reaper!
2. Which video game released in the mid 1980s featured a knight running through a graveyard (at level 1) shooting a range of creatures including zombies and demons, picking up bonus weapons along the way?

Answer: "Ghosts'n'Goblins"

A player had two chances in each life: the first hit meant your character (Sir Arthur) lost his armour; the second meant you died and went back to the start. Game experts (including Gametrailers) have claimed that this was one of the hardest arcade games ever released, given its difficulty to complete the later levels in particular.
3. Which video game features two dragons known as Bub and Bob who capture their enemies by blowing bubbles?

Answer: "Bubble Bobble"

This game was released on the Commodore 64 in 1986. It consists of 100 levels, generally increasing in difficulty (not to mention some very catchy music!). The game inspired several sequels including "Rainbow Islands: The Story of Bubble Bobble 2"; "Bubble Bobble Plus"; and "Puzzle Bobble".
4. Which Randy Glover game featured a man who ran and leaped through a range of levels defusing (collecting) bombs and avoiding being shot?

Answer: "Jumpman"

"Jumpman" featured a range of levels that could be accessed sequentially or at random (using the 'randomizer' menu). A player could control the speed of his 'jumpman' character by selecting a number between 1 and 9. Faster speeds allowed levels to be completed more quickly, but were harder to control.
5. Which game saw the hero, Rockford, digging through caves collecting diamonds and other treasures while avoiding a range of deadly obstacles?

Answer: "Boulder Dash"

To add to the challenge, there was also a time limit on each level. "Boulder Dash" spawned an amazing number of sequels, including a 3D (XL) version released in 2012 on the Nintendo 3DS.
6. Which game was pulled off the shelves not long after its release in 1987, due to its similarity with "Mario Bros"?

Answer: "The Great Giana Sisters"

The first level of the "Great Giana Sisters" game bears striking similarities to "Mario Bros" (apart from the fact that the main characters are two girls). It was, however, not created by Nintendo, who had some issues with its similarities. The game was taken off the shelves, and is now something of a collector's item (in its original format).
7. Which event could you NOT participate in when playing "Summer Games", an Olympics-based video game first released in 1984?

Answer: High Jump

Up to eight players could choose a country to represent. Winners had their national anthems played (in true digitized computer sound) when they won.
8. A video game version of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" was released on the Commodore 64 during the 1980s.

Answer: True

"The Hobbit" was an early role-playing/adventure game, where players had to type commands in an attempt to get through the story. It was considered quite advanced on release, with a relatively complex level of language accepted. It was praised by critics and had sold over a million copies by the end of the 1980s.
9. What kind of miner completed the name of a video game first released by Bug Byte in 1983?

Answer: "Manic"

Players run around mines attempting to collect a range of objects before time (that is, your oxygen supply) runs out. Adding to the challenge are various monsters out to catch poor old Willy, and trying not to fall too far down particular parts of each section.
10. Which bizarrely-titled video game was first released in 1984 by Llamasoft?

Answer: "Revenge of the Mutant Camels"

In case it wasn't strange enough that the player's character was a camel, there were all sorts of even weirder obstacles to avoid including phone booths, kangaroos on skis, sheep that exploded, and even faces of the designer. Upon victory the player was congratulated for saving 'camel-kind'.
