It was a dark and stormy night, so I decided to play some video games. Then the power went out so I went to bed, only to dream about visiting different video games.

Question 1 of 10
1. I had this weird dream that I was living in a video game world. But that isn't the weird part. The weird part was that I had a tour guide. She was a short little thing with an accountant's visor on her head and a lizard on her shoulder. Her name was Tour Guide Pdazzle. Terrifying. In the first place she showed me there were people running around with little red and white balls trying to capture these weird monsters. They had names like Jigglypuff, Charizard and Pikachu. It would have been a lot scarier but these monsters were only pocket-sized (kind of like Tour Guide Pdazzle.) What Nintendo game is this? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Tour Guide Pdazzle took me into outer space where there were light sabers going off all around me. Terrifying. I actually recognized the characters in this game: Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Darth Vader. There was something strange about them, though. They were made of a popular children's building set. The game comes from LucasArts for various play systems. What game is this? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. After those two adventures, Tour Guide Pdazzle took me to a tropical island. I thought it was pretty nice, right up to the point where the pirate ship appeared. I've never liked pirates--too terrifying. This ship was captained by a dude named LeChuck. His sole purpose in life seemed to be thwarting the plans of Guybrush Threepwood. I witnessed them have a sword fight. They didn't use swords, though. They used taunts. Really terrifying. What is this PC game from LucasArts? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The next place Tour Guide Pdazzle took me was Los Angeles. But it didn't look like any Los Angeles I ever saw. It was an apocalyptic Los Angeles. The street was torn up, buildings were damaged, light poles were down. "Been driving again?" I asked her wittily. She kicked me in my wittily. Hard. Any way the place looked terrifying. There were great big, hulking pigs in Deputy suits, alien troopers, floating octabrains and all kinds of weird creatures on the streets. They were kept from running amok by a big, well-built blonde guy with a flat-top haircut. He had a large array of weapons at his disposal including shotguns, chainguns, and pipe bombs. If he ran out of ammo he used his boot to kick the enemies into submission. What is the name of this first-person shooter from 3D Realms? (Hint: the hero shares a nickname with John Wayne, the actor.) Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. My goofy Tour Guide, Pdazzle, set me in the middle of a war. Green soldiers were battling tan soldiers in this game. The green soldiers were led by Sarge (clever name, eh?) While it was kind of terrifying to be in a war, the terror was mitigated somewhat by the fact that the combatants were toy-sized (in fact, they were only slightly smaller than Pdazzle herself.) Come to think of it, they all looked like those toy soldiers a lot of kids played with back in the day (and burned and blew up with firecrackers. Not that I ever indulged in that behavior.) The first battle took place on a kitchen countertop before moving outdoors. What 3DO PC game is this? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The next game world I found myself in was dark. Shadowy figures moved in the...well, shadows. They carried weapons: assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns and pistols all from a variety of countries. I could barely make out several teams as they advanced on a building. It looked like a hostage rescue. There were gunshots and someone called out "Tango down!" Terrifying. It looked for all the world like a scene from a Tom Clancy novel. That was no coincidence. This PC game is from Tom Clancy and Red Storm Entertainment. What is it called? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Pdazzle, the pint-sized video game Tour Guide, led me beneath the sea. "I guarantee you'll be absorbed by this game," she said. "It's about a SPONGE!" Nothing terrifying here I thought (other than her pun). As usual when dealing with Pdazzle, I thought wrong. I saw a talking sponge wearing pants, dress shirt and tie. There was a big pink starfish, a squid playing a clarinet, a gruff crab selling crab sandwiches and a squirrel in a diving suit. It was all terrifying, simply terrifying. The sponge seemed to be battling a plankton. What THQ game is this which is available for the PC as well as various gaming platforms? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "How did the monkey get down the stairs?" Tour Guide Pdazzle asked me. "I don't know," I replied. "It slid down the banana-ster." So I guess this next game takes place in a jungle and has something to do with monkeys and bananas. As long as I didn't have to hear any more of her jokes. The game: two monkeys--a big one and a little one--were fighting these things that looked like crocodiles as the monkeys tried to recover their stash of bananas. Terrifying. The little monkey was called Diddy. I'd tell you the big monkey's name but that would give away the name of the game, and that would be too easy and we can't have that now, can we? (Clue alert!) The monkeys used *barrels* in their battles with the crocodile things. What SNES game is this? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. "Enough fun and games," Tour Guide Pdazzle stated. "When did the fun and games start?" I asked. "Shut up!" she commanded. Pdazzle could be a little short at times. As punishment for my smart remark she took me to a world filled with imps, former humans, specters, demons, cacodemons, cyberdemons, lost souls, mancubuses (mancubi?), revenants and other creatures as well as the obligatory "Final Boss." Terrifying. I followed the unnamed hero as he made his way through dark levels armed with various weapons including the BFG 9000 gun. I was certain he was headed to his doom. Anyway, this game, from id Software, was ranked #37 in PC Gamer's Top 100 games. What game is this? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Tour Guide Pdazzle finally had pity on me and took me to a sports game. I can tell you it is a golf game. While golf itself can be terrifying (you should watch me play some time) the really terrifying part was that I had to compete not only against top current PGA players but some of the greats from golf's past. You start out playing amateur tournaments. As you succeed you have the opportunity to improve your driving, putting and short game skills. Win enough and you also get to go to Qualifying School. You cannot get on the PGA tour unless you do well at Qualifying School. Fail there and you have to start over. The goal is to make it to the PGA tour and win the four major tournaments (something the guy whose name is on the box has done). What is this PC game from EA Sports that is named for a PGA superstar? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: Pokemon Red

This is the obligatory Pokemon video game question. The first Pokemon games were "Pokemon Red", "Pokemon Blue" and "Pokemon Yellow" for the Game Boy. These were followed by "Pokemon Gold", "Pokemon Silver" and "Pokemon Crystal" for Game Boy Color. Each successive gaming platform saw new Pokemon editions: Ruby, Sapphire, Diamond, Emerald, Pearl, Platinum, Stadium and so forth until you get to the Nintendo Wii with "Pokemon Battle Revolution", "My Pokemon Ranch" and "Melee! Pokemon Scramble". By the way, Pokemon is short for pocket monsters which is why I gave you the pocket-sized monster clue in the question. I'm helpful that way.

Answer: Lego Star Wars

The "Lego Star Wars" game was a very clever marketing ploy. It opened up the sales of Lego Star Wars play sets. The "Lego Star Wars" game has been joined by "Lego Batman" and "Lego Indiana Jones". I continually badger them with letters asking for a "Lego Chuck Norris" game. So far my pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Answer: The Secret of Monkey Island

Here are some of the sword-fighting taunts and the comebacks: "My handkerchief will wipe up your blood!" "So you got that job as a janitor after all."
"I got this scar on my face during a mighty struggle." "I hope you've learned to stop picking your nose."
"You are a pain in the backside, sir." "Your hemorrhoids are flaring up again, eh?"
I'd like to use those lines myself but I rarely find myself in a sword fight.
(Hint: the hero shares a nickname with John Wayne, the actor.)

Answer: Duke Nukem 3D

"Duke Nukem", the first Duke game, was a side scroller. The player had to complete the levels going from left to right. In "Duke Nukem 3D" the player moves in an interactive environment. The player can bypass enemies by going through vents and hidey holes.
Caution: this game is rated M for mature players. It contains a lot of violence and denigrates women; or so I read on a game review site. There is a parental password that can be invoked should younger players wish to play. Somehow Mrs. Deputygary discovered this feature before I even had a chance to try the game out.

Answer: Army Men II

Most of the battles in "Army Men II" take place outdoors. Some, however, occur indoors. The opening battle takes place on a kitchen countertop. Soldiers can hide behind cans and salt and pepper shakers. Along with fighting tan soldiers the green soldiers also have to battle roaches. My favorite move was to lure the enemy over the range top, then turn on the burners once they got there and watch them melt. You also have access to a huge magnifying glass for melting enemy troops outdoors and aerosol cans and matches to melt enemy troops indoors.

When you get tired of melting the enemy you can just shoot them with your weapons.

Answer: Rainbow Six

"Tango" refers to target, or terrorist. "Tango down" meant that a terrorist was prosecuted with extreme prejudice (i.e. killed.)
In the game you are given a mission to accomplish. You choose your team; outfit them with weapons, appropriate clothing and gear; allocate them to teams; and draw up a plan for each team. For example, if you have to rescue hostages from a house you might set one team to take out the outside sentries, have another team pick the lock on the back door to gain entrance and have a third team storm the front door.
As with most games cheat codes exist to, for example, make your team invincible in case you just want to shoot people without having to use your brain and stuff. I'm just saying.

Answer: SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom

In "Battle for Bikini Bottom", Plankton has built an army of robots to take over the town. You take the role of SpongeBob, Patrick or Sandy to try to defeat the robots. Patrick is the starfish and Sandy is the squirrel. Each character has unique abilities.

The game also includes minigames. The only problem I have with the game is this: what is a squirrel doing underwater? And how does one plankton build a robot army? A plankton doesn't even have arms or legs, does it? I mean, a plankton is barely a sentient being. And where does a sponge come up with pants, dress shirt and tie? OK. I guess I have three problems with this game: an underwater squirrel, a megalomaniacal plankton, and a well-dressed sponge.

Answer: Donkey Kong Country

You start out with just Donkey Kong. Along the way you can find a barrel with Diddy in it. Free him from the barrel and he joins you. You can then hand off between the two: Donkey is stronger while Diddy is faster and can jump better. A nice thing is that if you have both and you lose one the other takes over. You do not have to start the level over.
If you are familiar with the original "Donkey Kong" game, Donkey used barrels to try to keep the little Italian-looking dude from rescuing the princess. Barrels fill many roles in "Donkey Kong Country". There is even a level where you get shot out of barrels using perfect timing to complete the level.
One of the bonus levels involves defeating a giant beaver to get a cache of bananas. That's right, I said beaver. I'm not sure what a beaver is doing in a game about monkeys, crocodiles and bananas but then I'm not sure why the main monkey is called Donkey.

Answer: Doom II

I believe BFG 9000 stands for "big fat gun" 9000. It shoots a green blob of something that kills anything in sight. It is the deadliest gun in the game. In fact, ugo.com named it the 2nd best video game weapon of all time. Which goes to show that some people have too much time on their hands if they can make a list of the 50 best video game weapons, but I guess I shouldn't throw stones considering some of the nonproductive things I do with my time.
By the way, the 4 block-long straight line in "Tetris" was chosen as the very best video game weapon of all time.

Answer: Tiger Woods PGA Tour

"Tiger Woods PGA Tour" allows you to make a totally customized golfer for yourself. You get to choose whether you want to be male or female. There is such a variety of faces, skin tones, hair, eyes, noses and mouths that you can make your golfer look almost exactly like you. Mine was tall, muscular and classically handsome. You can make them right- or left-handed. You can buy clothes, clubs, shafts, grips and golf balls. There is a companion program called "Course Architect" that allows you to make your own golf courses and you can also import courses that other people have built and uploaded to the internet.
