Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What TM will Brock give you after his gym battle?

Answer: Bide

You can find Brock in the gym in Pewter City. He is the first gym leader of the game and although he only has two Pokémon, you'll probably need to level up a bit before the battle. His Geodude and Onix will both use ground/rock-based attacks, but these are often no match for a Butterfree's Confusion attack or a Squirtle's Bubble attack.

After defeating Brock, you'll receive the Boulder Badge and TM 34 (Bide). You'll also be able to advance towards Mount Moon after Route 3 which was previously blocked off.

After the battle, you'll also be able to learn the Flash HM.
2. Which Pokémon cannot be caught in Misty's gym?

Answer: Poliwag

Although the three incorrect answers are all found in Misty's gym in "Pokémon Red and Blue", only Goldeen is found in "Pokémon Yellow" (as well as Seaking). In order to capture these Pokémon, you need to use the various fishing rods acquired throughout the game. Misty is the second boss of the game and she only uses two Pokémon: a level 18 Staryu and a level 21 Starmie.

In order to defeat these pretty easily, you'll need a grass or electric-type Pokémon. In "Pokémon Yellow", Pikachu will do just fine, but in "Pokémon Red and Blue", Bulbasaur might be a good first choice. If you started with Charmander or Squirtle, grass Pokémon can be found in the routes to the north of Cerulean City. Once she's defeated, Misty will hand over the Cascadebadge and the TM for Bubblebeam.
3. How many buttons must be pushed in Lt. Surge's gym to open the mechanical doors?

Answer: Two

Lt. Surge's electric-type Pokémon gym can be found in Vermilion City south of Cerulean City. In order to fight Surge, you'll need to avoid (or fight) three trainers in the lobby of the gym, and then search the trash cans in the room for a switch. When the first switch is pressed, you need to press a second, and it will be directly to the north, south, east, or west of the previous switch. Once this is pressed, the doors open. Surge has three Pokémon in "Pokémon Red or Blue" and only one in "Pokémon Yellow".

In order to remain true to the TV series, the creators switched Surge's Voltorb, Pikachu, and Raichu, and they replaced it with a single, much stronger Raichu. In order to get into Surge's gym, you need to cut down the bush outside using the newly-acquired HM01 given to you by the captain of the S. S. Anne.
4. Which Pokémon will Erika always have in "Pokémon Yellow, Red or Blue"?

Answer: Tangela

Erika is the leader of Celadon's City gym and she specializes in grass-type Pokémon, therefore, it's probably the best to use fire, psychic, and flying-type Pokémon. During the battle in "Pokémon Red or Blue", Erika will use a Victreebel, a Tangela, and a Vileplume, but in "Pokémon Yellow", she'll use Tangela, Weepinbell, and Gloom.

Her Pokémon in "Pokémon Yellow" are much stronger than in the other two games. When you've beaten her, you'll acquire the Rainbowbadge, and TM21 (Mega Drain). In order to enter her gym, you'll need to use HM01 (Cut), which you should have used in order to reach Celadon City anyways.

Her gym is in the south-west corner of the city.
5. What is the name of the badge given to you by Koga?

Answer: Soulbadge

Koga is sometimes considered the fifth boss, as well as the sixth. Koga's Pokémon are similar in strength and level to the Saffron City gym leader, Sabrina. Koga will specialize in poison-type Pokémon, often opting to use Venonat and Venomoth in one version and Koffing and Muk in the other. With psychic Pokémon, these bugs will be disposed of quickly.

In order to reach Koga, who's standing in the center of the Fuchsia City gym, you'll need to navigate through trainers and invisible walls. After the battle, you'll obtain your fifth (or sixth) badge, TM06 (Toxic) and the ability to use the HM Surf.
6. How many rooms containing warp pads are there in Sabrina's gym in Saffron City?

Answer: Nine

Sabrina's gym contains many Pokémon that are at relatively the same level as the Pokémon in Koga's Fuchsia City gym. The only difference is that Sabrina's gym is home to many ghost and psychic-type trainers. In order to reach Sabrina, you need to make your way through nine rooms by taking trips through warp pads.

In all three games, Sabrina will make use of an Alakazam which will be level 43 in "Red and Blue" and level 50 in "Yellow". In "Pokémon Red and Blue", she'll also use a Kadabra, Mr. Mime, and Venomoth, while in "Yellow", she'll use a level fifty Abra and Kadabra to go with her Alakazam.

After the battle, you'll get the Marshbadge and TM46 containing Psywave. After the battle, all Pokémon up to level 70 will obey you.
7. As a side-quest, you may want to visit the fighting dojo. Where can this gym be found?

Answer: Saffron City

The small fighting dojo is found right next to the Psychic Pokémon Gym in the north-east end of Saffron City. Here, you can test your Pokémon's skills by fighting ground/fighting-type Pokémon. When you defeat the Karate Master of the dojo, you won't get a badge or a TM.

Instead, you'll get a rare Pokémon. You can choose between the fighting Pokémon Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan for your prize. Since only one of each can be found in each game, and since you can only choose one, it makes them all the more unique. Hitmonlee specializes in kicking attacks, while Hitmonchan uses punches.
8. When you first visit Cinnabar Island, Blaine's fire-type Pokémon gym will be locked tight. Where can you find the key to the doors of his gym?

Answer: Pokémon Mansion

In order to enter Blaine's gym, the Secret Key must be found in the burnt out Pokémon Mansion. This mansion, which used to be a laboratory, contains many fire and poison Pokémon, but if you can make it through, you'll pick up numerous items. Once you've unlocked Blaine's gym, you'll need to go from room to room answering trivia questions in order to reach the leader.

In "Pokémon Red and Blue", he'll use four fire Pokémon consisting of a Growlithe, Ponyta, Rapidash, and Arcanine, but in "Pokémon Yellow", he'll use a Ninetales, Rapidash and Arcanine which are much stronger than the Pokémon in the other to games.

After the battle, you receive the Volcanobadge and TM38 (Fire Blast).
9. What is the name of the eighth gym leader?

Answer: Giovanni

Giovanni is the leader of Team Rocket, and his gym battle is the final time that you'll run into him. He was previously seen in the Game Corner and Silph Co., and from experience, you can probably determine that he's interested in ground and normal-type Pokémon.

In his gym, he'll have many moving platforms like he did in the Game Corner. In all three games, Giovanni will use a Dugtrio, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, and Rhydon, but in "Pokémon Yellow" he'll use a Persian, and in "Pokémon Red/Blue" he'll use a Rhyhorn.

After the battle, you'll acquire the final badge, the Earthbadge, and TM27 (Fissure). Also, all Pokémon up to level 100 will obey you.
10. Who is the final member of the Elite Four that is fought?

Answer: Lance

When you reach the Indigo Plateau at the end of the game, you'll need to face off against the Elite Four. The first, Lorelei, uses ice Pokémon to her advantage and sends out Dewgong, Cloyster, Slowbro, Jynx, and Lapras ranging from level 53-56. Bruno, the second of the four, will use ground and fighting Pokémon including Onix, Machamp, Hitmonlee, and Hitmonchan.

These range from level 53 to level 58. Agatha is the third elite trainer and she uses ghost and psychic-type Pokémon. Hers include two Gengars, a Golbat, a Haunter, and an Arbok.

These range from level 55 to 60. The final trainer, Lance, is a dragon-type trainer. He has Gyarados, two Dragonairs, Aerodactyl, and Dragonite. These range from level 56 to 62. After this, you'll have your final battle with your rival.
