"The Legend of Dragoon" Additions Quiz

Test yourself on additions, the unique fighting style of Playstation's "The Legend of Dragoon". I found this RPG very entertaining & memorable, partly due to this particular combat mode.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To add an addition, you press a button when the rotating square fits inside the still square. But which button on the Playstation controller do you press to add?

Answer: cross (or X)

If watching the squares is too difficult (and it does get challenging when you fight blue monsters like the Crystal Golem in the Shrine of Shirley,) there's also an X button in the lower right-hand side of the screen, which will move when it's time to add.
2. Being conspicuously clothed in red, Dart is the dude who gets to control the fiery Red-Eyed Dragon. Coincidentally, some of his additions are also fire-themed. Which of these is NOT one of Dart's additions?

Answer: Pyro Flip

Dart's Additions: Double Slash (+1), Volcano (+3), Burning Rush (+2), Crush Dance (+4), Madness Hero (+5), Moon Strike (+6), Blazing Dynamo (+7).
I was expecting them to allude to fire, or to his character like some others do, but Crush Dance totally eludes me. Madness Hero and Moon Strike refer to the plot of the story, and everyone's first addition sounds really generic, like Double Slash or Whip Smack, but Crush Dance? Sounds like Kongol on the disco floor!
There is no existing addition called Pyro Flip, but I thought it would be a great alternate name for Blazing Dynamo.
3. What is Rose's final addition?

Answer: Demon's Dance

Rose's Additions: Whip Smack (+1), More & More (+2), Hard Blade (+4), Demon's Dance (+7).
More & More is another one that doesn't have a strong connection (I'm doing more & more damage to you?) but Rose's clean swordsmanship (or swordswomanship) definitely trumps Dart's clumsy two-handed style. I guess Rose is a fencer whereas Dart is some Medieval slash 'n' basher.
4. In terms of NON-magical combat, what is the difference between Lavitz and Albert?

Answer: Lavitz uses a spear and Albert uses a javelin

Lavitz's & Albert's Additions: Harpoon (+1), Spinning Cane (+2), Rod Typhoon (+4), Gust of Wind Dance (+6), Flower Storm (+7).
Since Lavitz uses a spear, the first hit of each of his additions are underhand, like he's carrying a load of bricks. Using the lighter javelin, Albert carries his weapon overhand and depends more on his speed than strength to defeat his enemies. Just try Harpoon with the two and see the difference.
Yes, Lavitz does use Blossom Storm & Albert does indeed cast Rose Storm, but that is a difference of magic. This quiz is about additions, & I said "NON-magical combat."
5. What is Haschel's 7-hit addition (7 total hits)?

Answer: Hex Hammer

Haschel's Additions: Double Punch (+1), Flurry of Styx (+2), Summon 4 Gods (+3), 5-Ring Shattering (+4), Hex Hammer (+6), Omni-Sweep (+7).
Remember, if Hex Hammer is a 7-hit addition, it adds 6 hits.
Still, I thought Hex Hammer would have a 6-hit total because "Hex" reminds me of a hexagon.
Flurry of Styx is definitely the most fun to watch. If only I could do that with my hands!
6. In which addition does Meru do a front walkover over her hammer (for the gymnastics pro in each of you)?

Answer: Cat's Cradle

Meru's Additions: Double Smack (+1), Hammer Spin (+3), Cool Boogie (+4), Cat's Cradle (+6), Perky Step (+7).
Should one attempt them, Cat's Cradle & Perky Step require the most acrobatic feats (leap & splits!), Hammer Spin looks the most powerful, but Perky Step packs an astonishing 600% damage, the most of any addition. As for Cool Boogie, I don't know how effective dancing in front of your enemy is, but I'm willing to let this one pass for my favorite adorable character.
7. What are Kongol's three additions?

Answer: Pursuit, Inferno, and Bone Crush

Pursuit (+1), Inferno (+3), Bone Crush (+5).
It's really too bad that the Giganto only has three, but it could be explained by his speed (30, whereas the next slowest, Albert, hits at 40). Since Kongol won't be able to get many turns in a single battle, the creators of the game figured we'd never get to Kongol's last addition if we had to fight our way through five additions. Same explanation for why Kongol only has three spells.
8. What are Shana & Miranda's last addition?

Answer: There isn't one

Sorry, the archers do not have additions. They only fire a single solitary arrow per turn. The closest they get to an addition is when Miranda gets the Detonate Arrow right before confronting the last two bosses... good show.
9. Which of the following characters have an addition that includes the word "dance"?

Answer: Dart, Rose, and Albert/Lavitz

Dart has the ever revolving Crush Dance, Rose's last addition is Demon's Dance, and Albert & Lavitz use the Gust of Wind Dance. Though the best dancer in Donau, Meru does not have an official "dance" addition.
10. How do you get the last additions for each character?

Answer: You must raise all of the other additions to level 5

Raising an addition to level 5 means you must successfully execute that addition 80 times (or 81 times. Just get it up there.) Since you can only do one addition per turn, it's no surprise that Rose and Meru are usually the first to get their last super additions. Dart also gets it pretty quickly because you can't switch him out. For a while, I thought that you had to wait for a plot point and a level-up because the first time I played, Rose got Demon's Dance after defeating the wolf Kamuy, after which she also rose to level 32. I've checked a lot of the fan sites and codes sites, and they concur that all you have to do is perform the other additions 80 (or 81) times.
