Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation is a charity founded to raise money for research into which disease previously *NOT* commonly associated with children?

Answer: Cancer

Alexandra "Alex" Scott was four years old in 2000 when she contracted cancer. As a result she set her sights on putting together a lemonade stand, in her hometown of West Hartford, to raise money for research into childhood cancer. She raised $2,000 with her first attempt.

The following year she set up the stand again and so started a tradition. When she moved with her family to Pennsylvania for further treatment the tradition went with her. Sadly, in 2004, at the tender age of eight years Alex succumbed to her disease.

Her tradition, however, has continued and is now carried on as "Lemonade Days". This is a coordinated event that occurs across the USA on the same weekend that Alex established her first lemonade stand. Funds raised are put towards research, expediting cures, education and raising awareness of childhood cancer causes.
2. What is the missing word in the name of this organisation "_____ For The World", whose mission is to bring about change with a view to end poverty and hunger?

Answer: Bread

Bread For The World is a American Christian movement that is a non-partisan collective aiming to defeat global poverty by campaigning to politicians for policy changes. The seed for the organisation was planted in 1972 and came to fruition in 1974 under the guidance of Reverend Arthur Simon. Each year they focus on a different hunger issue and urge churches across the United States to write "Offerings of Letters" to Congress to amend policies to effect changes so that they will benefit the needy.
3. Sounding more like a Cold War novel title, which American based organisation that conducts humanitarian programmes in Asia was listed as one of the "Ten Charities Expanding in a Hurry" in 2011?

Answer: East Meets West

East Meets West conducts a range of healthcare, education and clean water and sanitation initiatives through areas of South and South East Asia. Set up in 1988 by renowned author Le Ly Hayslip its mission statement is "to transform health, education and communities of disadvantaged people in Asia by building partnerships, developing opportunities and creating sustainable solutions". Essentially they seek to work with communities with a view to make them self sufficient rather than dump a load of aid on their doorstep and leave them to themselves. One of their priorities is educate the children of lower income families and then consolidate this with incentives such as scholarships to achieve higher outcomes.

They also provide dental facilities, surgical programmes that focus on heart disease and innovative solutions to establish clean water and safer sanitation.
4. Which not-for-profit organisation, established in 2000, was built with the aim of promoting "positive behavioural values"?

Answer: The Foundation For a Better Life

The foundation promotes ideals, among others, such as honesty, hard work and caring through a series of public awareness campaigns via the media, the internet and outdoor advertisements. The operation does not have any political agenda and is not aligned with any religion, nor does it solicit or accept donations from the general public. Whilst its initial funding came by way of an endowment from billionaire Phillip Anschutz, the foundation's own internet site indicates that its public service media time and space is donated by television, theatre, outdoor, print, and radio media outlets.
5. Skilled surgeon and ophthalmologist, Fred Hollows set up his foundation to primarily provide which form of health care in developing countries?

Answer: Eyesight

Fred Hollow's vision (no pun intended) was to provide affordable eye treatment to disadvantaged people in developing countries with a view (no, this is not a pun either) to ending avoidable blindness in these areas. He'd commenced a number of projects in regions such as Eritrea, Nepal and Vietnam prior to setting up his foundation. Unfortunately he passed away soon after but his widow, Gabi Hollows, has vowed to ensure his work is continued. Today the foundation continues to provide a full range of eye health services through 19 countries in Africa and South East Asia. Hollows also devoted a great deal of his time to improving the general health levels of Australian aborigines.

In 1990, he received the Human Rights Medal and was named "Australian of the Year".
6. One of the world's better known humanitarian organisations is CARE International. What does the acronym CARE stand for?

Answer: Co-operative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere

CARE began life as a collective providing food parcels to areas in Europe decimated by World War II. Its acronym at that time stood for Co-Operative for American Remittances to Europe. Soon they were providing aid to many Asian countries, spread their influence to Latin America in the 1950's and, during the 1960's, bought their attention to Africa.

At this point they came to realise that their "CARE packages" only provided temporary relief and were not leading toward a solution. As a consequence the packages were phased out and they turned their energies into developing large scale feeding projects and setting up community self development programmes.

These steps included agroforestry projects, creating environmentally friendly farming enterprises and land management practices.
7. Which of the following operations is devoted to providing a worldwide platform to assist poor people to become producers of "income generating products and commodities"?

Answer: The Grassroots Business Fund

The aim of Grassroots (GBF) is to provide support for a large number of disadvantaged people in creating a sustainable enterprise as independent entrepreneurs. Along with assistance to develop the sustainability of these businesses they also commit technical assistance and investment to strengthen the performance of these operations and to also allow them to upscale. Based in Washington DC GBF is an idea developed by Harold Rosen of the International Finance Corporation in 2004. They now have offices in Kenya, Peru and South East Asia.
8. What is the English translation of the French named "Medecins Sans Frontieres"?

Answer: Doctors Without Borders

Based in Geneva, Switzerland Medecins Sans Frontieres (or MSF) is best known for the projects it conducts in developing countries and areas ravaged by war. Set up by a small team of French doctors in 1971 as a response to the crisis created by the Biafra Secession the core ideal of MSF is that the need and right to medical attention for all people is far greater than the respect that needs to be shown for national borders.

By the year 2007 the organisation numbered some 26,000 volunteers providing their services as doctors, nurses, engineers in respect to water and sanitation, logistical experts and administrators.

In 1999 the MSF accepted the Nobel Peace Prize as a worthy recognition for their "continuous efforts to provide medical care in acute crisis as well as raising international awareness of potential humanitarian disasters".
9. Operation Smile is based in Norfolk, Virginia and provides which of the following gifts?

Answer: Cleft Lip Surgery

Doctors Bill and Kathy Magee were participating in a cleft lip repair mission in the Philippines during 1982 when they realised that there was a pressing need for many similar missions around the world. This was the beginning of Operation Smile. Soon they received a call from Mother Teresa to treat some deformed children at her mission in India and, as a result, the scope of the work done by Operation Smile escalated.

As well as their surgical missions to repair cleft lips and palates in developing countries the operation divides its energies into training physicians, assisting nations to reach a competent level of self sufficiency in this type of surgery and sets up education programmes and research facilities with a view to eventually eradicate the condition.
10. Which of the following non-profit organisations was founded on the philosophy "give a man a fish, you feed him for a day but teach him to fish you'll feed him for life"?

Answer: Heifer International

This is a great concept that was adopted by an American farmer, Dan West, while he was serving as a relief worker during the Spanish Civil War. He was totally frustrated by being forced to chose who gets the benefit of the meagre milk rations he was given to dole out that he thought that there had to be a better way.

He reasoned that if a family was provided with a cow and they were taught how to look after that cow then the family would not have to suffer the shame of having to rely on others to be fed.

The plan goes a step further. The first female off-spring from the donated cow is then donated by the beneficiary family to another needy family (and so on) thereby multiplying the benefits of the initial donation and eventually providing aid to the entire community.

The idea has now extended beyond cows to encompass other forms of livestock that are pertinent to the areas in which they are donating. Gifts can include supplies of rabbits, honeybees, llamas, chickens, goats and water buffalo, as well as tree seedlings.
