Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which caliber is considered the weakest (in terms of energy) of the following cartridges?

Answer: .22 LR

The .22 LR is only marginally lower in energy than the .25 automatic, making it the weakest.
2. Is there any difference in the diameter of the .38 S&W special and the .357 S&W magnum?

Answer: No

Both share the same diameter even though the .357 is considerably more potent in terms of energy due to the length of the cartridge case.
3. Will Jacketed Hollow Point bullets "reliably" expand at handgun velocities?

Answer: No

This is a common misconception. Even though cartidge co.'s are on the leading edge of bullet developement, most handgun bullets can't be driven at velocities fast enough to "guarantee" that they will reliably expand at handgun velocities.
4. Which of the following cartridges can be loaded to higher velocities?

Answer: .44 S&W magnum

Due to the case length being longer, the .44 magnum can hold more powder, thus can be driven to higher velocities.
5. What is generally recommended as the smallest "personal defense caliber" by most self-defense instructors?

Answer: .380 automatic

While there is a ".25" cult that believes that the diminutive .25 cal. automatic is adequate for self defense, the vast majority of self-defense instructors consider the .380 automatic to be the bare minimum of caliber to begin with.
6. Who is considered the father of modern handgun fighting and the modern technique?

Answer: Col. Jeff Cooper

Col. Jeff Cooper is given credit as to the development of the "Modern Technique" and handgun fighting.
7. With the advent of the new "monster" magnums released in the last several years, what cartridge is now the "Worlds Most Powerful"?

Answer: .500 S&W Magnum

At over 2800 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, with a 350gr bullet, the 500 S&W now claims the title of the world's most powerful handgun.
8. What bullet type would you pick to use in your "personal carry" firearm?

Answer: Jacketed Hollow Points

All will do their job if a vital organ or the CNS is hit. However, with Self-Defensive loads one must be aware of "pass through" as in the case with FMJ's. Solid lead RN bullets on the other hand will often be defeated by bone mass and flatten out on impact. Wadcutters are typically for target shooting only and made of the same soft lead as RN bullets.
9. What is the best "rule of thumb" when selecting a handgun cartridge for self-defense?

Answer: Select the largest calibre you can shoot accurately and with sufficient speed.

Col. Jeff Cooper and others that are highly known in the field of Self-Defensive Handguns recommended that you carry the largest calibre that you can shoot accurately and quickly. Remember that a handgun bullet will generally only destroy what it comes in direct contact with.

It does you no good to use a .44 mag. if it takes you 10 seconds to draw and fire it. Likewise, it will do you no good to use a .22LR if the bullets never reach the vital area.
10. Which one of the following is not a handgun cartridge?

Answer: .416 Rem Mag

The .416 Remington Magnum is a rifle round only. It is used mainly for dangerous game. The .460 S&W, .44 Russian, and the .454 casull are all handgun cartridges.
