Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following vehicles is known as the "Deuce and a half"?

Answer: M35 cargo truck

The phrase deuce and a half was first coined for the Reo Two and one half ton cargo truck. The M35 is most commonly called the deuce and a half, although any 2 1/2 ton military truck is eligible. The XM819 is a 5 ton truck that is used mostly by the Army. The M37 is a 1 and 1/4 ton truck, and the M1 Garand you should already know to be a Springfield rifle.
2. The non-military form of the Unimog is traditionally classified as what type of vehicle?

Answer: Agricultural Tractor

Traditionally the civilian Unimong is classified as a farm tractor, even though in the German and Swiss military the 404 is a Cargo/Radio truck. Mercedes-Benz is now producing a civilian model for import to the U.S. as a commercial truck.
3. The proper military acronym for the AM General Hummer is?

Answer: hmmwv

HMMWV is the proper military acronym for High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. The civilian version, known as the Hummer, is produced by General Motors. The hmmwv is one of the few non-weapon vehicles which cannot be purchased by civilians through DRMO.

They do not meet D.O.T. safety standards, thereby restricting them from civilian ownership. When the U.S. Military is done with their hmmwvs they destroy them prior to sale.
4. Which of the following vehicles did the military version of the hummer NOT replace when it was put into service in the 1980s?

Answer: M37 Powerwagon

The Hmmwv replaced 5 vehicles of the U.S. Armed Forces. They were the Jeep 1/4 ton, Gama Goat, M718A1 Ambulance, Half-Ton Mule, and the M792 Ambulance. The M37 was put out of service in the 1950s as the duece and a half grew in popularity
5. In 2002 the U.S. Pentagon unveiled their new class of Medium Tactical vehicle. This eight-wheel-drive cross between a tank and an armored truck is called what?

Answer: Stryker

The stryker is a land-based vehicle and while not fully amphibious is able to ford water up to the top of its wheels.
6. The Dodge M37 Powerwagon was used by the US military for only a few years. What was done with the trucks after they were demilitarized?

Answer: Sold to the private sector as farm and fire trucks

M37s can still be found all across the United States in service on farms and in fire departments. As they come to be more popular with collectors more and more are being sold and restored.
7. The DUKW was a common amphibious vehicle during WWII. It was created by bolting a hull to what vehicle?

Answer: 6x6 2.5 ton cargo truck

DUKW is a military vehicle classification. The D stands for the year 1942. The U stands for utility amphibian. The K is for front wheel drive, and the W is for dual rear axles. Most vehicles used by the military have such letter code classifications.
8. The U.S. military bought around 200,000 DUKWs during WWII of which almost all are still in existence today, owned by private collectors and tour companies. Which of the following countries has the most private collectors and clubs for to the DUKW today?

Answer: Great Britain

The U.S. left 2000 DUKWs with Great Britian after the war to help develop their military power. All of them, which remain in existence, are now in private hands.
9. A standard U.S. military multi-fuel engine that is used in most modern cargo trucks will run on what fuels?

Answer: diesel, kerosine, home heating oil, jetfuel, and vegetable oil

The multi-fuel engine is a diesel engine which has been modified to operate on any diesel based fuel or any mix thereof. Kero,(K1) jetfuel,(J5) and home heating oil (K2) are all diesel oils at different purities. Any diesel will run on vegetable oil (bio-diesel) as that is what they were invented by Rudolph Diesel to run on.

Many of the newer diesels in todays modern cars and trucks have seals in them that disintegrate in vegetable oil to prevent it from being run in them.
10. During the Vietnam war, the mule was the favored frontline cargo vehicle due to its ability to?

Answer: be dropped from a helicopter and still operate

The mule is the simplest of all cargo vehicles ever used by the U.S. military. It is basically a platform with four wheel drive and no electrical or safety equipment. It could be dropped from a helicopter without a parachute and still fire up and run.
