Military Vehicles Trivia Questions

1. From what tank was the suspension of the T-28 medium copied from?

From Quiz
Tanks of the Soviet Union

Answer: Vickers A1E1

The Soviet T-28 tank shared many similarities with the British Vickers A1E1, and it also influenced the design of the Soviet T-35 tank. The T-28 was generally not considered a successful tank, and it performed poorly in the Winter War of 1939-40.

2. This heavy WWII German tank was expensive to build and hard to maintain, but with 100mm of frontal armor and an 88mm gun it was also hard to stop and was feared by the allies. What was it?

From Quiz Armored Vehicle Recognition

Answer: Tiger

Of the other options, the Jagdpanzer had a 90mm gun, while the Panzer IV had 50mm of frontal armor and a 75mm gun. The Panther was equipped with 80mm of armor in front, with a 75mm gun.

3. The first native French medium tank design was not much of a success, but pioneered French tank engineering for decades, as well as influencing American tanks.

From Quiz Tanks of France

Answer: Char d' Assault

The Schneider Char d' Assault was just a Holt agricultural tractor, with armor plating added to it. It was rushed into production in 1916, and was armed with a 75mm gun and two machine guns, manned by the seven man crew. Ventilation was poor, mobility was horrific, and was quite vulnerable to different battlefield circumstances not reflected in design. The US Army adopted a few models for testing and experimenting, and even used a few in combat.

4. Featuring five turrets containing three cannons and six machine guns, this tank was a quite the sight, but not a worthy fight.

From Quiz Tanks of the Bear

Answer: T-35

The T-35 was the result of the need for a heavy tank in the Soviet arsenal. Somehow, it was more practical than its competition, the TG, tank, but was difficult to produce, lumbering and slow, and required an uncoordinated crew of 11. It was mechanically unreliable, as well as hard to steer. Even with all its weight, the tank was still lacking in armor protection. The only use the Russians managed to find for this behemoth is to appear in military parades.

5. In what war did the first purpose-built attack helicopter first appear?

From Quiz Helicopter Gunships

Answer: Vietnam War

The very first dedicated helicopter gunship was the AH-1 Cobra and it was used during the Vietnam War. The Cobra flew over a million operational hours in the conflict. By the end of the twentieth century the Cobra was being phased out by the U.S. Army. The USDA Forest Service has some of the retired Cobras and they are being refitted to monitor fires using their sensors.

6. Which modern British vehicle carries out similar functions to the Russian BMP and the American Bradley?

From Quiz Armored Fighting Vehicles of the World

Answer: MCV-80 Warrior ICV

The Warrior is a state-of-the-art infantry combat vehicle, which means that is supports the infantry that it ferries into battle. Armed with a 30mm cannon, the Warrior is capable of engaging light and medium targets. The AT105 Saxon is an APC, built only for the purpose of getting troops to the front lines, not supporting them like the Bradley and BMP. The FV432 was the main APC in British service, until replaced by the Warrior. The Kangaroo was a World War II APC, converted out of the chassis of the M7 Priest.

7. Which tank is named after the General who liberated Paris from the Germans in 1944?

From Quiz Names of Battle Tanks

Answer: AMX 56

AMX 56 named after General Philippe de Hauteclocque "Leclerc", commander of the French 2nd Armoured division.

8. What feature gives MRAP vehicles greater protection than other armored vehicles?

From Quiz Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles

Answer: "V" shaped hull

The "V"-shaped hull deflects the blast from an IED or landmine away from the vehicle, protecting the occupants inside. They work rather well in fact. I know firsthand...

9. Who was the M1A1 main battle tank of the United States named after?

From Quiz U.S. Tanks

Answer: Abrams

Born at Springfield, Massachusetts, September 15, 1914, General Abrams was the U.S. commander in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. A graduate (1936) of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he served in World War II and, following numerous other assignments, in 1964 became a full general and Vice Chief-of-Staff of the United States Army. Succeeding William Westmoreland as overall military commander in Vietnam, he implemented a program known as Vietnamization. This was supposed to bring a gradual end to US involvement in Vietnam and to enable the South Vietnamese to become increasingly responsible for running the war. After returning to United States, he served from 1972 to 1974 as Army Chief-of-Staff. He died in Washington, D.C. of lung cancer, September 4, 1974, the first army Chief-of-Staff to die in office. He was buried with full military honors in a special plot in Section 21 of Arlington National Cemetery.

10. Who first came up with the idea of the tank?

From Quiz History of the Tank

Answer: Leonardo Da Vinci

Yes, in fact this Florentine sketched out a design for a prototype; however, without self-propulsion, it wasn't much good. Not until the invention of the internal combustion engine was the tank practical.

11. This WWII US tank was easy to build, easy to maintain, as well as both reliable and fast, but with only a short barreled 75mm main gun it had trouble defeating the well-armored and more powerful German tanks that it had to fight. What tank was this?

From Quiz Armored Vehicle Recognition

Answer: Sherman

The Stuart was a light scouting tank with a 37mm gun. The T-34 had a 76mm and was less vulnerable due to its sloped frontal armor. Only around twenty M-26 Pershings saw service during WWII. Developed late in the war, they saw more action in Korea, where they suffered a lot of problems and were withdrawn in 1951.

12. The first multi-turret tank, this tank was the oldest heavy tank, as well as heaviest tank, serving at the outbreak of World War 2.

From Quiz Tanks of France

Answer: Char 2C

The Char 2C was a massive mobile fortress. First designed in 1918, the 2C was the first multi-turreted tank, with a 75mm gun and four 8mm machine guns. Weighing in at 67.9 tons, this tank was the heaviest in the world at the outbreak of World War 2. A crew of 12 created an uncoordinated fighting force under a commander that also operated the main gun. Six tanks were in transit at the outbreak of World War 2, but never actually saw combat. They were already, however, far obsolete.

13. This tank was the culmination of a successful series of tanks, all of which pioneered and developed the use of the Christie suspension. This tank in particular served well heading into World War 2, but was phased out later.

From Quiz Tanks of the Bear

Answer: BT-7

The BT series was the first to use the Christie suspension system, developed by American John Christie, whose designs were disregarded in his home country. However, successive designs more than proved the Christie suspension. By the time of the BT-7, the series had created a mobile, fast, and moderately powerful tank. It was intended as a light tank, and so was understandably lower in armor protection. It more than outperformed the Japanese tanks, and easily defeated German models in the Spanish Civil War. However, in the war itself, due to the amazing pace of armor development, the BT-7 could no longer perform, due to its poor protection.

14. What is the NATO reporting name of the Russian equivalent to the "Apache"?

From Quiz Helicopter Gunships

Answer: Havoc

The Havoc is seen as the Russian Apache. When it was first designed it lost out to the Kamov KA-50 "Hokum" during trials. However a better sensor upgrade enabled it to do more than the Hokum and is now becoming the main Russian attack helicopter.

15. Which choice is the most powerful and sophisticated Chinese tank?

From Quiz Armored Fighting Vehicles of the World

Answer: Type 98 MBT

The new Type 98 MBT is very advanced, and anticipated to be on par with Western tanks, including the M1 Abrams. Of course, nobody can test that, with it kept tightly in the Chinese military, but the specifications suggest a powerful armored vehicle. The Type 90 was replaced by the Type 98, and there is no such thing as a Type 100. The T-90 is not of Chinese origin, though few if any may be in the Chinese service.

16. Which main battle tank is named after the head of the U.S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972?

From Quiz Names of Battle Tanks

18. Where were the first tanks built in the twentieth century?

From Quiz History of the Tank

Answer: Great Britain

19. What is the official designation of the British Chieftain main battle tank?

From Quiz Cold War Tanks

Answer: FV4201

The FV4201 Chieftain was a British main battle tank developed from the Centurion tank. It was put into service in 1966. It was the most formidable main battle tank in the world with a powerful cannon, extremely effective armor and good speed. The FV4004 Conway was a British prototype tank based on the Centurion 3 hull with a 120mm cannon. There was one built before the project was terminated in 1951. It was a response to the newly deployed Soviet IS-3 tank. The FV101 Scorpion is a British armored reconnaissance vehicle. It entered service in 1973. The FV214 Conqueror was a British post-war heavy tank armed with a 120mm cannon. It first saw service in 1955 (only in West Germany). It was a response to the Soviet IS-3 tank.

20. What was the name of the most produced Japanese tank in World War II?

From Quiz Tanks of Japan

Answer: Type 95 Ha-Go

The Type 95 Ha-Go tank was poorly armored and underarmed, so much so that it was essentially useless against American medium tanks such as the M4 Sherman. Despite this, it saw extensive service due to its relative cheapness and ease of transport.

21. The BT-7A was what type of tank?

From Quiz Tanks of the Soviet Union

Answer: Artillery support

The BT-7A was commonly referred to simply as "the artillery tank", and it was armed with a 76mm howitzer for close-range artillery support role. Its guns could also be used in closer skirmishes, and it proved more deadly than other variants of the early BT-7.

22. This tank was the most numerous French tank at the outbreak of World War 2.

From Quiz Tanks of France

Answer: R-35

The Renault R-35 tank was designed purely in the role of infantry tank. In 1935, the R-35 was a sound design, with good mobility and excellent armor protection. However, the short-barrelled 37mm gun was a shortcoming, and, as such, was slowly being upgraded to longer barrels before the war broke out. 1100 tanks were in front-service at the start of the war, and numbers were sold to Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Yugoslavia.

23. This heavy tank often stopped Germans cold in the beginning of the war, and heavily influenced further Soviet heavy tank development.

From Quiz Tanks of the Bear

Answer: KV-1

The Klementi Voroshilov tanks were finally the model which broke the Soviet obsession of multiple turrets. The tank, first in service in 1939, surprised German troops with frighteningly unpenetrable armor. Only 88 rounds and aircraft could properly dispose of a KV tank. However, they were spread thin throughout the armies, and had poorly trained crews. In 1942 and 1943, a few automotive and transmission issues gave the final word and ended the service life of the KV-1, in the face of new German models that could easily penetrate the KV.

24. What branch of the U.S. military uses the "Super Cobra" as its attack helicopter?

From Quiz Helicopter Gunships

Answer: Marine Corps

The Super Cobra is the attack helicopter of choice for the U.S. Marine Corps. The Marines wanted the Apache, but funding was denied by Congress.

25. Which was the first viable and widely-used amphibious vehicle to be classified as a tank?

From Quiz Armored Fighting Vehicles of the World

Answer: PT-76 light tank

The PT-76 was a lightly armed and armored tank that was capable of operating in deep enough water to make it amphibious. It can enter water without preparation, making it a valuable asset, filling a role that no other tank could. It serves in many countries today, and notably in the Vietnam war, where the swampy battlegrounds were perfect for its amphibious abilities. The T-54 was the main Russian tank at the time the PT-76 was created, and the LVT-4 Buffalo was an amphibious personnel carrier used by the U.S. in World War II. The M1A2 Abrams is considered one of the best all-around tanks in the world.
