Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This heavy WWII German tank was expensive to build and hard to maintain, but with 100mm of frontal armor and an 88mm gun it was also hard to stop and was feared by the allies. What was it?

Answer: Tiger

Of the other options, the Jagdpanzer had a 90mm gun, while the Panzer IV had 50mm of frontal armor and a 75mm gun. The Panther was equipped with 80mm of armor in front, with a 75mm gun.
2. This WWII US tank was easy to build, easy to maintain, as well as both reliable and fast, but with only a short barreled 75mm main gun it had trouble defeating the well-armored and more powerful German tanks that it had to fight. What tank was this?

Answer: Sherman

The Stuart was a light scouting tank with a 37mm gun. The T-34 had a 76mm and was less vulnerable due to its sloped frontal armor. Only around twenty M-26 Pershings saw service during WWII. Developed late in the war, they saw more action in Korea, where they suffered a lot of problems and were withdrawn in 1951.
3. I was the main attack vehicle for American Army Infantry and Scouts during the 1980s and 1990s, and well into the 21st century as well. I am fast and well armed and can kill a tank 3750 meters away, although I can't take a hit from one. I have tracks, but I am not a tank. What am I?

Answer: Bradley

Of the other options, the Lav-25 has wheels and is used by the Marines. The Stryker is a great vehicle, but is much newer than the Bradley, so not in service during the 1980s. The M-113 comes in many versions, and (like the Bradley) is equipped with a T.O.W. missile system.
4. I was the most produced and most successful Soviet tank of WWII. My sloped frontal armor and good speed made me deadly. What am I?

Answer: T-34

Although 50,000 Shermans were made, 84,000 T-34s saw service at some time.
Around 6000 panthers came off the assembly line, and only 9200 Panzer IVs.
5. Of the following options, which tank came into service earliest?

Answer: AMX-30

The AMX-30 came into service in 1966, while the others were much later: the T-72 in 1973, the Merkava in 1978, and the M-1 in 1980.
6. Which Soviet tank was the FIRST to feature an auto loader for its main gun? Hint: it also had a 125mm smooth bore main gun with 6 small road wheels.

Answer: T-64

The T-55 had only 5 road wheels, while the T-72 had 6 large road wheels, but no auto loader. The T-80 is a later version, much altered, of the T-64.
7. The M-1 Abrams can run on jet fuel. True or false?

Answer: True

The Honeywell AGT1500C multi-fuel turbine engine can take diesel or jet fuel! It's basically like a jet engine and take it from this author, don't stand behind one: the exhaust is so hot it will burn your skin right off!
8. How many machine guns are there on an M-1 Abrams?

Answer: 3

The M-1 Abrams has two 7.62mm machine guns (one mounted coaxial with the main gun, the other on top by the loader's hatch), plus one .50 cal on the commander's station.
9. The worlds first mass-produced infantry fighting vehicle entered service around 1966. It was a tracked vehicle with a 73mm main gun, shielded the occupants from radiation and small arms fire, and was designed for fighting alongside tanks. It also featured firing ports for the infantry inside to fire out from. What was it?

Answer: BMP-1

The BRDM and BTR series both have wheels not tracks. The M-113 doesn't have a 73mm gun and is technically classified as an APC not a fighting vehicle, despite being fitted with a variety of weapons in different configurations over the years.
10. Yes or no? The Bradley Fighting Vehicle can float/swim.

Answer: True

According to the technical manual, it can, but I don't recommend it! Having lived on one for 8 years, I can say that it has a swim barrier, but it is prone to leaks and is very heavy!
