Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which modern British vehicle carries out similar functions to the Russian BMP and the American Bradley?

Answer: MCV-80 Warrior ICV

The Warrior is a state-of-the-art infantry combat vehicle, which means that is supports the infantry that it ferries into battle. Armed with a 30mm cannon, the Warrior is capable of engaging light and medium targets. The AT105 Saxon is an APC, built only for the purpose of getting troops to the front lines, not supporting them like the Bradley and BMP.

The FV432 was the main APC in British service, until replaced by the Warrior. The Kangaroo was a World War II APC, converted out of the chassis of the M7 Priest.
2. Which choice is the most powerful and sophisticated Chinese tank?

Answer: Type 98 MBT

The new Type 98 MBT is very advanced, and anticipated to be on par with Western tanks, including the M1 Abrams. Of course, nobody can test that, with it kept tightly in the Chinese military, but the specifications suggest a powerful armored vehicle. The Type 90 was replaced by the Type 98, and there is no such thing as a Type 100.

The T-90 is not of Chinese origin, though few if any may be in the Chinese service.
3. Which was the first viable and widely-used amphibious vehicle to be classified as a tank?

Answer: PT-76 light tank

The PT-76 was a lightly armed and armored tank that was capable of operating in deep enough water to make it amphibious. It can enter water without preparation, making it a valuable asset, filling a role that no other tank could. It serves in many countries today, and notably in the Vietnam war, where the swampy battlegrounds were perfect for its amphibious abilities.

The T-54 was the main Russian tank at the time the PT-76 was created, and the LVT-4 Buffalo was an amphibious personnel carrier used by the U.S. in World War II.

The M1A2 Abrams is considered one of the best all-around tanks in the world.
4. What was the most powerful completed tank in the world in August 1945, when World War II ended?

Answer: JS or IS-3 Joseph Stalin

The IS-3 was the third in a line of highly successful Russian heavy tanks. It boasted a superior 122mm cannon and impressive 230mm armor. It could take on any tank of its era, and the Russians had the production capability to make it into a feared weapon.

The Allies had no answer until the late 1950s. The King Tiger was also a very heavy tank, though it had a slightly weaker gun and thinner armor. The IS-3 also surpassed the King Tiger in terms of mobility, and was much easier to manufacture than the lumbering King Tiger. Nevertheless, both beasts were very much feared by Allied tankers.

The M-26 Pershing was the first successful U.S. heavy tank, and was more than capable of taking on the vaunted Tiger and Panther tanks. The A41 Centurion was a main British tanks from the late 50s throughout the 1970s.
5. After its loss in World War II, Germany reentered the best of the world's tanks by producing which series?

Answer: Leopard Series

The Leopard 1 and Leopard 2 are both very good tanks, both used extensively by NATO forces. The Leopard 2 is more sophisticated in technological terms, having state-of-the-art features. The Tiger Series, consisting of the Tiger I and the King Tiger, were Nazi Germany's last tanks in World War 2.

The Maus Series is comprised of one half of a tank, an unfinished super-tank that was somehow supposed to save the dying Nazi Germany. The Luchs series is more modern and very well-made, but it belongs in the Armored Reconnaissance Vehicle section.
6. Winston Churchill at first expressed his distaste at this British tank being named after him.

Answer: A22 Mark IV

The A22 Mark IV was a box-shaped infantry support tank that suffered early in its life from weak armament and low mobility. However, in its later years, its rugged reliability, heavy armor, and versatile chassis proved to be an invaluable asset to Allied forces from North Africa to France.

The A27M Cromwell was a British tank that had a very similar performance to the U.S. M4 Sherman, although the design was definitely different. The A12 Matilda II was a tank that surprised the German Afrika Korps with its thick armor in the early years of the war.

Heavily armored as it was, the A12 was quickly outmoded by later Axis tanks. The A15 Mark VI was the Crusader light tank, which was well respected by the German tankers for its great mobility. The Crusader often outflanked the German Panzers and hit the tanks in the vulnerable rear armor.
7. The British upgraded this tank with a heavier gun, giving it the new designation Firefly.

Answer: M4 Sherman

The M4 Sherman was upgraded to hold a larger and more powerful 17pdr gun, instead of the American 75mm. The 17pdr gun was capable of penetrating Axis armor and destroying Axis tanks from reasonable range. The Firefly was well-liked by its crews, who could finally engage the German tanks.

Although the armor was still quite thin (after all, the Sherman was only a medium tank), the mobility that the tank had gave it an even chance in engaging the heavier Axis tanks, such as the Tiger. The M3 Lee was the Sherman's predecessor, very similar besides the fact that the M3 had a side-mounted 75mm gun instead of the turret.

The A38 Valiant was not a particularly successful tank, but it was the predecessor of the superb Centurion, with an effective cannon in a reliable hull on a good chassis.

The A30 Challenger was a purpose-built tank to mount the powerful 17pdr gun, but the tank crews still found that the Sherman Firefly was a better mount for the 17pdr.
8. The French produced a replacement for the excellent AMX-30 tank, and named it after which French World War II general?

Answer: Leclerc

General Leclerc was the first French general to liberate Paris, the City of Light. The newest French Battle Tank is named after the general. The Leclerc Tank is a solid design, and will ease out the AMX-30 in current French service.
9. The Germans name their tanks using ferocious cat names, and the Americans name their tanks after generals. The British name their AFVs after everything, but what did the Russians use?

Answer: Political leaders

German AFV names: Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Lynx (Luchs)
American AFV names: (Ulysses S.) Grant, (Robert E.) Lee, (William Tecumseh) Sherman, (John J.) Pershing, (George S.) Patton, (Philip H.) Sheridan, (Creighton W.) Abrams, and, almost, the (Matthew B.) Ridgway.
British AFV names: Wolverine, Priest, Challenger, Conqueror, Crusader, Cromwell.
Russian tank names: Klimenti Voroshilov (KV series), and Joseph or Iosef Stalin (IS series).
10. After decades of using old M4 Sherman, T55s, and Centurion tanks as the mainstay of its armored force, Israel switched to using which domestically produced tank?

Answer: Merkava

The Merkava was the result of decades of Israeli combat experience, which dictated that a heavy gun and thick armor was essential. After fighting quite well with upgraded tanks from other countries, the Israeli Defense force turned to the Merkava. The Merkava was different from previous Israeli tanks, in that it no longer relied on mobility, but also its brute force.

The Elefant was a German tank destroyer in World War II, which suffered from a host of different problems. The Magach and Sabra are both upgrades of the U.S. M60 tank, and both serve in the Israeli Defense force, though none of them outfight the Merkava.
