Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The M1 Abrams is an American main battle tank that first entered service in 1980 as a replacement for the M60 tank. Were any M1 Abrams tanks destroyed as a result of fire from enemy tanks up until the 1991 Gulf War?

Answer: No

The tank was named "Abrams" after a commander who served in the Vietnam War, Creighton Abrams. It saw combat in multiple wars including the Gulf War, Iraq War and War in Afghanistan.

The M1 Abrams tank was vastly superior to any enemy tank it faced during the Gulf War. It mostly fought against outdated Soviet tanks like the T-55 and the T-72. The M1 could destroy enemy tanks from longer ranges, faster and used superior tactics.

There were several tanks that were heavily damaged and required extensive repairs but there were no M1 Abrams tanks destroyed because of tank-on-tank combat.
2. Which of these T-80 models is the most recent to enter service?

Answer: T-80UD

The T-80 was a Soviet main battle tank. It is a development of the T-64 that first saw service in 1976. The latest development of the T-80 is the Ukrainian T-84 which is still being produced by Ukraine.

The T-80UD (1987) was a Ukrainian modification of the T-80 tank. It features a diesel engine and remotely operated anti-aircraft guns.

The T-80U (1985) had a better turret, reactive armor, improved gunsights and 9K119 Refleks missiles.

The T-80B (1978) had numerous upgrades including a new turret, rangefinder, fire control, autoloader, composite armor and more.

The T-80BV (1985) had reactive armour added to it (on the T-80B version).
3. What is the official designation of the British Chieftain main battle tank?

Answer: FV4201

The FV4201 Chieftain was a British main battle tank developed from the Centurion tank. It was put into service in 1966. It was the most formidable main battle tank in the world with a powerful cannon, extremely effective armor and good speed.

The FV4004 Conway was a British prototype tank based on the Centurion 3 hull with a 120mm cannon. There was one built before the project was terminated in 1951. It was a response to the newly deployed Soviet IS-3 tank.

The FV101 Scorpion is a British armored reconnaissance vehicle. It entered service in 1973.

The FV214 Conqueror was a British post-war heavy tank armed with a 120mm cannon. It first saw service in 1955 (only in West Germany). It was a response to the Soviet IS-3 tank.
4. Which of the following versions of the German Leopard tank was exported in the greatest numbers?

Answer: 2A4

The Leopard 2A4 was a West German main battle tank and it was a successor to the Leopard 1 tank. It first entered service in 1979.

After 2000, once the Cold War was over, Germany accumulated a surplus of Leopard 2A4 tanks, which it sold off to NATO and other friendly armies. In total 13 countries were sold a substantial number of Leopard 2A4 tanks.
5. What was the caliber of the main gun on the T-62 Soviet main battle tank?

Answer: 115mm

The T-62 was a Soviet main battle tank which first saw service in 1961. Armed with the excellent 115mm smoothbore cannon, the world's first smoothbore tank gun. Because it was smoothbore it gave a much greater muzzle velocity than western 90mm or 105mm tank cannons.
6. Was the M60 tank officially classified as a Patton tank?

Answer: No

The M60 tank was an American main battle tank developed from the M48 Patton tank. It first saw service in 1961.

Although the M60 tank was developed from the M48 Patton tank, the M60 tank was never officially classified as a Patton tank because it was too extensively modified from the M48 tank. It was also the first tank to be named a main battle tank instead of a medium tank.
7. What was the official classification of the M551 "Sheridan" tank?

Answer: Airborne Assault Vehicle

The M551 "Sheridan" was an American armored vehicle that started service in 1969.

Because the US no longer used light, medium and heavy tank classifications, the M551 "Sheridan" could not be classified as a light tank, and because of that it was officially classified as a "Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle"
8. What of the following is the designation of a vehicle that was built on the chassis of the Soviet PT-76 light tank?

Answer: ASU-85

The PT-76 was a Soviet amphibious light tank introduced in the early 1950s. It was used in the North Vietnamese army during the Vietnam war.

The ASU-85 was a Soviet airborne self propelled gun. It was developed to replace the ASU-57 tank and saw first service in 1951. It was used in the Soviet-Afghan war.

The BMP-2 was a Soviet amphibious IFV introduced in the 1980s. It was used in numerous conflicts around the world.

The ASU-57 was a Soviet airborne assault gun. It saw first service in 1951. It was phased out in favor of the ASU-85.

The BMD-2 was a Soviet airborne IFV introduced in 1985. It was used in Soviet-Afghan war and the Ukrainian war.
9. For what reason did the German Kanonenjagdpanzer became obsolete when the Soviets started introducing T-64 and T-72 tanks?

Answer: Its 90mm cannon was not powerful enough

The Kanonenjagdpanzer was a West Germany tank destroyer that was built on the Leopard 1 chassis. It first saw service in 1965. The design of this tank resembled WW2 era Jagdpanzer IV tanks.

The Kanonenjagdpanzer was mounted with the 90mm cannon from the M47 Patton tank. Although the cannon featured a high rate of fire, the low muzzle velocity and the inability to use SABOT rounds (because of the muzzle brake) deemed the cannon obsolete against more modern Soviet tanks.
10. Did the Scorpion armored reconnaissance vehicle (which entered service in 1973) ever hold the Guinness world record for the fastest production tank?

Answer: Yes

The FV101 Scorpion is a British armored reconnaissance vehicle. It entered service in 1973. The tank was recorded doing 82.23 km/h (51.10 mph) on 2002 March 26th, which was acknowledged at the time as the fasted speed attained by a production tank.
