Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What empire finally conquered the empire of Mali in 1335?

Answer: Songhai

It could be argued that, aside from Egypt, the west African empires of Mali and Songhai were the two most powerful in African history.
2. What now stands at ground zero of the atom bomb blast in Hiroshima?

Answer: Peace Memorial Park

The park includes a cenotaph in memory of the victims and nearby Atomic Bomb Dome, the shell of the only building left standing following the blast.
3. What Scott Joplin work, created in 1899, is his most memorable and popular work?

Answer: Maple Leaf Rag

Scott Joplin introduced 'Ragtime' music to America in the late 19th century, a precursor to Jazz (which kicks 'azz', btw!)
4. What term is used in the United States for the festival called 'Fat Tuesday'?

Answer: Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is best celebrated in the city of New Orleans I am told, at least in the United States!
5. What do Chinese people toss into rivers to commemorate the death of one of their greatest poets Chu Yuan?

Answer: Sticky rice in lotus leaves

Chu Yuan committed suicide by jumping into a river. The people of China tossed sticky rice balls (called 'zongzi') into the water in order to prevent the fish from eating the great poet.
