While in some ways the James Cameron version is most accurate in its depiction of the actual sinking, it has to be said that his representation of the ship's officers is insulting to the point of being almost libellous. While he presents many of them as inept, incompetent and cowardly, the recollections of the survivors is very different, and all recollect their heroic efforts to save as many passengers as possible. Indeed, Cameron's characterisation of First Officer William Murdoch was so inaccurate and insulting that the movie makers were forced to issue a public apology.
