Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From which city in Southern England did the Titanic depart?

Answer: Southampton

The Titanic departed Southampton, Hampshire, on April 10, 1912. Southampton was one of the hardest hit cities in terms of casualties with over 500 citizens from the city losing their lives after the ship sank. The Titanic's ultimate destination was supposed to be New York City.
2. None of the dogs aboard the Titanic survived when the ship sank.

Answer: False

Three dogs survived. It is unknown exactly how many dogs were aboard the Titanic as many passengers did not record their pets when boarding. Three dogs survived and all of them were owned by wealthy passengers who kept them in their cabins which was against the protocol.

There were also reports of a Newfoundland named Nigel who allegedly saved passengers by swimming them to lifeboats but it is believed to be a tall tale.
3. Of the following groups of crew members, which is the only to have at least one member survive the sinking of the Titanic?

Answer: Restaurant staff

Although much of the restaurant staff were from working class backgrounds and were allegedly locked in their quarters to allow the survival of other passengers, three of the sixty-six survived. The entirety of the orchestra, mail room clerks and the guarantee group (workers charged with repairing anything that was neglected) all perished. Overall, just under half of the Titanic's victims were members of the crew.
4. Who was Titanic's fourth officer, who was the final surviving officer of the ship?

Answer: Joseph G. Boxhall

Edward J. Smith was the captain, Charles H. Lightoller was the second officer and James P. Moody was the sixth officer. Joseph Boxhall was able to survive when he was placed in charge of Lifeboat #2 which departed the Titanic with less than half of the possible passengers it could carry. He also spotted the Carpathia and alerted the ship to the other lifeboats.

Boxhall later served on ships during World War I and in private service afterwards. When he died in 1967, his ashes were scattered at sea at the location where he believed the Titanic had sunk which was somewhat close to where the wreckage was later discovered.
5. As the Titanic initially left port in England, she nearly collided with another ship called the New York.

Answer: True

Turning into the River Test, the Titanic approached the Oceanic and the New York moored at berth 38. The Titanic's passing caused the New York to swing toward her. The tug, Vulcan, attached a line to the New York and the Titanic reversed her engines, thus averting a near collision. Captain Smith was on the bridge but the ship was under the command of harbor pilot.

The Titanic moved backwards and the New York's bow swung in front of her. The New York was moved by tugs, and after more than an hour's delay, the Titanic departed!
6. On the RMS Titanic, who or what was Jenny?

Answer: A cat

Jenny was a cat aboard the Titanic whose main job was to control the rodent population. Jenny did not survive the sinking of the Titanic. However, there is one (likely false) legend that Jenny abandoned the Titanic while still in Southampton. Jenny gave birth a week before the Titanic's voyage began and a crew member allegedly witnessed Jenny remove each of her babies from the Titanic, and once they were all safe, did not reboard the ship. This has led to the legend of Jenny, the cat who predicted the sinking of the Titanic.

However, several crew members who did survive the sinking reported feeding Jenny during the voyage.
7. Which is true regarding the lifeboat situation aboard the Titanic?

Answer: It carried more lifeboats than it was legally required to

According to British law at the time, the Titanic only needed to have 14 lifeboats which was nowhere near the capacity necessary to save everyone. The Titanic had 14 official lifeboats plus six other boats that were designated as such before the disaster.

This still was well below the necessary number to save all the passengers. Attempts to have the ship hold more lifeboats were allegedly rebuffed by J. Bruce Ismay for fear the lifeboats would spoil the view.
8. What was the mood amongst the majority of passengers immediately after the Titanic struck the iceberg?

Answer: Ignorance

According to several survivors' accounts, a majority of the people onboard weren't even away the ship hit an iceberg as they felt no impact. Several accounts even report that the passengers played around with the ice that fell onto the ship, including having snowball fights and even a soccer game with a large ball of ice.

It wasn't until later on that the passengers became aware of just how serious the crash was.
9. Which of the following groups of people had the lowest survivor rate aboard the Titanic?

Answer: Second-class men

An estimated 92% of the men in second-class died aboard the Titanic. There have been a number of theories as to why and how this happened. The most commonly accepted theory is that the second-class passengers were directed to the port side where the crew members were much stricter about not letting men on the lifeboats if women and children were not yet saved.

Other theories are that the third-class passengers were much more likely to feel the crash than the second-class which meant they had more time to save themselves and that third-class men were considered more valuable to row the lifeboats.
10. What is the claim to fame of Titanic survivors Violet Jessup and Arthur John Priest?

Answer: They survived multiple sinking ships

Prior to surviving the Titanic, Jessup survived the 1911 collision between the Olympic and the Hawke. She then found work as a stewardess aboard the Titanic and survived on Lifeboat 16. In 1916, she found work as a nurse aboard the medical ship HMHS Britannic, which exploded under unknown circumstances during World War I. Jessup survived that after she lunged out of a lifeboat that was being sucked into the propellor.

Her fellow Titanic survivor Arthur John Priest was also onboard both the Britannic and the Olympic and survived as well. Priest also survived three other maritime disasters: the RMS Asturias in 1908, HMS Alcantara in 1916 and the SS Donegal in 1917.
