Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these best describes the type of damage Titanic received from the iceberg?

Answer: Popped rivets

The water-tight doors were not effective, but they never collapsed.
2. Who was an expert on the ship, who is quoted as having said, "She has an hour. Two at the most"?

Answer: Thomas Andrews

Andrews knew it was doomed the moment 6 compartments had been filled. The ship lasted in fact for 2 hours and 40 minutes.
3. What was the exact date and time of the sinking?

Answer: April 15, 1912 at 2:20 a.m.

The ship's lights died at 2:15 am, and it ultimately sank at 2:20 am.
4. Why was Bruce Ismay summoned to the U.S. and British Courts of Inquiry?

Answer: For exiting the ship, into one of the lifeboats, while women and children were still on board.

His act was cowardly and led to the death of innocent women.
5. Titanic was one of the first ships to not only have a swimming pool, but to use S.O.S. as a distress signal. If both parts are true, answer "true." If even one part is false, answer "false."

Answer: True

Titanic was an 886 feet amazing long. By today's standards, that is short. The first distress suignal from the Titanic used then-existing "and more familiar" C.Q.D. distress signal. However, the wireless room also used the then-new S.O.S. in subsequent distress signals.
6. Name either of the two wireless operators on duty at the time of the collision.

Answer: Harold Bride

Harold Bride went on to survive the night, but Phillips was not as lucky.
7. According to recent research, what was (most likely) the final song played by the orchestra before the sinking?

Answer: "Autumn"

All four members of the band perished. It is popularly believed that "Nearer, my God, to Thee" was the final tune, but this has been disputed, as discussed in this website:

8. What famous author would later write a detailed account of the sinking called "A Night to Remember"?

Answer: Walter Lord

Walter Lord wrote a chilling account of the sinking, so vivid that one can imagine being there.
9. What ship, at the time of Titanic's sinking, was accused by some of being only ten miles away and thus close enough to have come to her aid?

Answer: SS Californian

The Californian's captain, Stanley Lord, claimed that his vessel had been much further away, and unable to help. The facts remain a matter of dispute.
10. The night wore on. The Carpathia picked up the fortunate 705 passengers from the lifeboats. However, that number would have been smaller if one lifeboat hadn't returned to pick up some of those in the water. So, finally, how many people were pulled from the water?

Answer: 9

Lifeboat 4 picked up five people, and Lifeboat 14 rescued 4 people from the water, making a total of nine. These few individuals were in an advanced state of hypothermia. Everyone in the lifeboat will be remembered for their efforts. Happy sailing!
