11. For the next five questions I will give you a name of a passenger or crew member. You must say if he/she survived and in which lifeboat. Major Archibald Willingham Butt.

Answer: He perished in the sinking.

Major Butt boarded the Titanic at Southampton. Travelling as a first class passenger, he occupied cabin B-38. He was 45 years old when he died on Titanic.
12. Lookout Frederick Fleet.

Answer: He was rescued in lifeboat 6.

Mr Fleet was 24 years old at the time of the disaster. On April 14, 1912, along with Reginald Lee, Fleet took watch at 10pm. At 11:40pm, Fleet saw a black mass ahead, immediately struck three bells and telephoned the bridge. He reported "Iceberg right ahead" receiving the reply "Thank you".

While still on the telephone, the ship started swinging to port. The lookouts saw the starboard side of the ship scrape alongside the iceberg, and saw ice falling on the decks. They had thought that it had been either a close shave or a near miss. 20 minutes later, Fleet made his way to the Boat Deck where Second Officer Charles Lightoller ordered him to launch lifeboat 6, the first lifeboat to be launched from the port side.
13. Mrs Benjamin Hart (Esther Ada Bloomfield).

Answer: Esther and her daughter Eva were rescued in lifeboat 14.

Esther (45) was travelling with her husband Benjamin Hart (43) and their daughter Eva (7) in second class. Benjamin died in the disaster. Esther died in 1928.
14. Mrs Rosa Abbott.

Answer: She managed to get into Collapsible A.

Mrs Abbott (35) was a third class passenger, who boarded the Titanic with her two sons. As the Titanic took her final plunge Mrs Abbott and her two sons jumped from the deck, she managed to get in Collapsible A but the two boys were lost. The boat had been swamped as it was launched and its occupants balanced precariously in knee-deep water until they were eventually picked up by Collapsible D. Fifth Officer Harold Lowe ensured the survivors were transferred and then opened the sea cocks.

It drifted away with three bodies still in it, their faces covered by lifebelts.
15. Mme Léontine Pauline Aubart.

Answer: She was rescued probably in lifeboat 9.

Mme Aubart (24) was born in Paris on 20 May 1887. She boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg with her maid. She occupied cabin B-35 (£69 6s). Mme Aubart was the mistress of millionaire Benjamin Guggenheim who was also aboard. He died, while she and her maid were rescued. Leontine Pauline Aubart died on 29 October 1964, aged 77.
16. Which of the following passengers were saved in lifeboat 4?

Answer: Mrs Madeleine Astor and her maid Rosalie Bidois

Mrs Madeleine Astor (18) was the wife of millionaire John Jacob Astor. They boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg with a manservant, a maid and their pet. Madeleine died in Palm Beach, Florida in 1940 at the age of 47. (Note: Mr Carter was saved in Collapsible C and Mr Ryerson died in the sinking.)
17. Percentages: What percentage of the women and children were saved?

Answer: 70%

The women and children in third class had the smallest chance of getting into a lifeboat (47% were saved). The women in first class had actually a 100% chance of getting saved, but there were a few women and one child in first class who were lost. So that makes 93% of women and children in first class saved.
18. How many male passengers (not including children) were lost during the sinking?

Answer: 83

90% of the men in second class were lost, 69% in the first class and 86% in steerage. Of the crew members was 78% lost.
19. There was a little bit of chaos while filling the lifeboats. One lifeboat (while being lowered) almost struck against another lifeboat. Which lifeboats am I talking about?

Answer: Lifeboat 15 on lifeboat 13

Lifeboat 15 was loaded by First Officer William Murdoch and contained about 65 people (mainly men). It was launched from the starboard side at 1:40am under the command of Fireman Frank Dymond.
20. Fifth Officer Harold Lowe returned to pick up survivors, but could only rescue 4 passengers.

Answer: True

He was in charge of lifeboat 14 and rowed to about 150 yards from the Titanic. There he 'herded together' five boats and redistributed the passengers from his into the other boats, 12, 10, a collapsible and another boat. After the cries from the people in the water had subsided a bit he deemed it safe to return to pick up survivors.

He then asked for volunteers to go back with him. Along with his volunteers, he then rowed back to the wreckage and picked up 4 survivors (one, Hoyt of New York, died later in the boat.)
21. Give the names of the officers who were lost in the sinking (in order of their rank)

Answer: Smith Wilde Murdoch Moody

Captain Edward John Smith (62) was last seen in the bridge area having given the final order to abandon ship. He appears to have made no attempt to save himself. His body, if recovered, was never identified. Sixth Officer James Moody (24) was on watch on the bridge when the Titanic struck the iceberg.

He answered the phone from lookout Frederick Fleet and reported to First Officer William Murdoch, "Iceberg right ahead". During the evacuation, he helped fill lifeboats 12, 14 and 16. He was last seen about 2:18am by Second Officer Charles Lightoller trying to launch the collapsible boats.
22. Second Officer Charles Lightoller allowed only one male passenger into a lifeboat. Give his last name and the boat he escaped in.

Answer: Peuchen 6

Major Peuchen (52) boarded the Titanic as a first class passenger, he occupied cabin C-104. As lifeboat 6 was being lowered, Peuchen noticed it was leaving poorly manned. He told Lightoller he was a yachtsman. Captain Smith suggested Peuchen go down one flight and break a window on the promenade deck to get into the boat.

But Lightoller replied that if Peuchen was a good sailor he could slip down the ropes to get into the boat. So Peuchen grabbed a rope, swung himself off the ship, and hand under hand slithered down 25 feet of rope into the boat. Peuchen said later he did not realize Titanic was going to founder until he saw it from the lifeboat.
23. How many people of the "A la carte restaurant" survived the sinking?

Answer: 3

The two female cashiers were rescued in lifeboat 6. Only one man of the restaurant, the kitchen clerk, could escape by jumping six to eight feet into a lowering lifeboat (probably lifeboat 13). He pleaded to Rousseau (the chef of the restaurant) to jump as well, but Rousseau couldn't because "He was too fat".
24. What task was appointed to Quartermaster George Rowe during the sinking?

Answer: He had to fire the rockets, starting at 12:45am.

Fourth Officer Joseph Boxhall instructed Rowe to bring some rockets to the bridge. They sent up the first rocket at about 12:45am and then fired them at five or six minute intervals according to Captain Smith's instructions. Rowe continued to fire rockets until 1:25am by which time Boxhall had left to take command of lifeboat 2.

A few minutes later Captain Smith instructed Rowe to take charge of Collapsible C. It was the last boat to be lowered from the starboard side at around 1:40am. And as it began its descent two male first class passengers quietly stepped in (William Carter and Bruce Ismay).
25. 1517 people lost their lives during the sinking of the so-called "unsinkable" Titanic.
