On November 19, 1837, the "Compania de Caminos de Hierro de La Habana" opened the first railroad line from Havana to Bejucal, a distance of 27.5 km. It was first steam railway line in Latin America only 12 years after the inauguration of the first British railway. By that time not even Spain had any railroad lines.
