The text was written by Paula von Preradovic in 1947 - one year after the melody was adopted as the national anthem of the Republic of Austria.

The origin of the melody is disputed. It was originally attributed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart but since the 1960s this theory has been rejected by various musicologists. Today the song is attributed to either Johann Baptist Holzer or Paul Wranitzky.
