Subject: Celebrities I Have Known and Met

Posted by: mnbates
Date: Aug 19 06

Suggested by Lemmyrules, IndieQueen, satguru and others. A thread for people to post their stories about meeting famous people. I will start with one of the first celebrities I have met. Ian Hendry, the actor, I was walking down the train from London to Swindon, carrying my suitcase on a trolley when I heard someone say "You know if that had wheels you could pull it along", there wasn't enough room to do this, I turned to give this bloke a few choice words and saw that it was Ian Hendry, so I sat opposite him and we chatted.
He consumed large numbers of gin miniatures in the hour from London to Swindon, but it didn't seem to affect him. He said he was visiting his mother in Bath (I was visiting my father in Swindon). We talked about films, books and families, a very pleasant bloke. I was saddened to hear of his death on Christmas eve, 1984.

Regards,

Tin

I've met quite a few notable people over the course of time, including:

Mike Patrick, longtime play-by-play sportscaster for ESPN. At the time I met Mike, he was still calling games for Raycom/Jefferson Pilot Sports. The game he called was a Saturday night tilt between NC State and Georgia Tech.

Left Drizzell, longtime college basketball coach (most notably at Maryland), who at the time was a color analyst for Raycom/Jefferson Pilot Sports. (I met him at the same game I met Mike Patrick.)

Kay Yow, Hall-of-Fame women's basketball coach at NC State. Not only did I get a chance to talk to Coach Yow on a few occasions, I also usually sat behind her dad at the women's game. Both very nice people.

Jim Valvano, the late men's basketball coach at NC State. (I also had a couple classes with his oldest daughter, Nicole.) The day I met him, at the freshman pep rally, he smiles at me, greets me, and tells me to take my Clemson shirt off. (Long story about the Clemson shirt, and I'll tell it later.)

Joe Gibbs, Hall-of-Fame pro football coach and NASCAR team owner. I met him at a book signing at his racing team's shop in Huntersville, North Carolina. He was really excited to see someone in the crowd wearing the colors of the Washington Redskins and wrote a very special inscription in my book.

Bob Inman, longtime senior news anchor at WBTV, our CBS affiliate in Charlotte, and author of the novel "Home Fires Burning", which became a made-for-TV movie. I met him while doing a tornado safety video for York County, South Carolina.

I got to meet Larry Hagman while doing a hotel familiarization trip to Dallas, and Erma Bombeck when she came to the Butterball Turkey Talk Line kitchens in our building (she used our offices across the hall for doing some voice-overs).

I met Sonny Bono a few years before he died - an amazingly down-to-earth guy. I didn't expect to be impressed, but would have felt very comfortable having a cup of coffee with him.

I don't know if she would count as a celebrity but I went to high school with someone who is semi-famous. Her name is Shannon Flack she did some "adult films" under the name Angel Heart and is now married to Jason Hervey (Wayne from the Wonder Years).

Well... an ancestor was best friends with Abe Lincoln - we have pictures and gifts and stuff. My mom kind of knew a girl who was friends with Brooke Shields. My dad ran into this guy once who claimed he knew Elvis "before that rock 'n roll" ruined him... I have autographs from Jorge Garcia, Jason Earles, and a few others, though haven't met them face-to-face.

I found out last year that Helen Reddy is my third cousin. I actually haven't met her but thought it was worth a post.

Forgot that I have actually met two.

I nursed Tammy Wynette when she ended up in hospital needing surgery on an Australian tour.

And I also met Joni Mitchell when she was here for a tour and I had no idea who she was. I was out horseriding and bumped into her with a few friends (they had hired some horses too) and they were completely lost. We were on our way back to the stables so took them with us.

She told us she had a concert that night, tis very embarassing to not know who someone is, and they gave us free tickets.

A friend's son has met Van Disel, Justin Timberlake (said he was a huge jerk) and Cameron Diaz. Just thought that I would throw that out.

It didn't strike me until I re-read this post that I know who Ian Hendry is. For those of you who don't know, he played an astronaut who, along with Roy Thinnes, traveled to a second Earth in the sci-fi classic "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun". Great movie.

Was in very close proximity to Elizabeth Taylor in Miami in 1979. She swam by me in the pool in the Omni hotel. Didn't speak to her though.

Met Telly Savalas in the same hotel, in the elevator, during the same trip. He was nice and said hello to my sister and me.

I got to interpret for Bella Abzug in Turkey during the Habitat II United Nations Conference. She was an amazing woman.

Those are my brushes with greatness.

I never met a real celebrity, but my college roommate's uncle was Otis the drunk from the Andy Griffith show. He was the real guy (from Andy Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy, NC) who Otis was fashioned after.

Would never call her a celebrity, but met Princess Diana several times, I volunteered to do a Saturday shift in the cafe at the London Lighthouse every weekend, and if she was in town, she often popped in, talked to some of the afflicted there and had a chat with us unpaid kitchen staff, who provided free meals to HIV and AIDS sufferers and other people whe paid for it to subsidise the Lighthouse's activities. She was a genuinely nice and compassionate person, there were no cameras there, she really cared, not too bright, but not a manipulative bone in her body, she is missed, the rest of the royals are not a patch on her.

I met George Karl the NBA coach.
I have met Bud Selig. I didn't know who he was at the time because I was only six and didn't follow baseball to close.

I worked on a panto in Brum with Frankie Howerd, and as a drama student I met Sir Tyrone Guthrie, Sir Laurence Olivier and Dame Edith Evans (who told me that she suffered dreadful stage fright which helped me to alleviate mine!) I also met Richard Burton and Claire Bloom after the opening of 'The Lady's Not for Burning' in London in 1948. I was taken to see the play (I was all of 11 years old) by a friend of the family who was at Oxford with Burton.

I knew Marty Wood, one-time World Champion rodeo saddle bronc rider when I was a teenager. I went riding at his parents' stable in Bowness, Alberta. When Marty wasn't on the rodeo circuit he worked at the stable.

I met Victor Borge in 1958. A beautiful person.

My wedding was loaded with celebrities (they weren't celebrities then, but they are now) - Tony Award winner Len Cariou ('A Little Night Music', 'Sweeney Todd'), Donnelly Rhodes (Dutch on 'Soap'), Martha Henry (married to Donnelly at the time but now married to Rod Beattie, star of 'Letters from Wingfield Farm'. Martha is one of Canada's leading Shakespearan actors and a fixture at the Stratford, ON festival), Marty Lager (who wrote the CBC series 'Rainbow Country'), John Hirsch and Tom Hendry, co-founders of the Manitoba Theatre Centre. John was an internationally-acclaimed director and Tom now devotes his time to writing plays.

Other celebrities I've met and/or worked with (the 'worked with' applies to anyone on this list who is in theatre):
Zoe Caldwell, actor; Tom Kneebone, actor (not the nicest person on the planet); Dr. David Suzuki, internationally-renowned biologist and environmentalist; Peter Stringham, CEO of Young-Rubicam International and former CEO of HSBC (he was my creative director in an ad. agency I worked for); the Archbishop of York, the Most Rev. John Sentamu (whom I met and sat beside throughout the 2007 General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada. He was an absolute delight, with a wonderful sense of humour); Jean Vanier, founder of L'Arche and one of my personal heroes.
There are probably more actors, directors, etc. who should be on this list but I can't list them all, anyway.

I also went to high school with Ken Taylor, the Canadian Ambasador to Iran who was involved in the American hostage incident in 1979.

Sort of tangential, my sister's best friend's brother is an actor (on imdb and wiki) who has been in several films, and TURNED DOWN a role in LOTR..sigh....
And my mam used to teach Janick Gers of Iron Maiden (and his sister) when they were in primary school infants (Grade 1 and 2)
