Subject: Celebrities I Have Known and Met

Posted by: mnbates
Date: Aug 19 06

Suggested by Lemmyrules, IndieQueen, satguru and others. A thread for people to post their stories about meeting famous people. I will start with one of the first celebrities I have met. Ian Hendry, the actor, I was walking down the train from London to Swindon, carrying my suitcase on a trolley when I heard someone say "You know if that had wheels you could pull it along", there wasn't enough room to do this, I turned to give this bloke a few choice words and saw that it was Ian Hendry, so I sat opposite him and we chatted.
He consumed large numbers of gin miniatures in the hour from London to Swindon, but it didn't seem to affect him. He said he was visiting his mother in Bath (I was visiting my father in Swindon). We talked about films, books and families, a very pleasant bloke. I was saddened to hear of his death on Christmas eve, 1984.

Regards,

Tin

I don't know too many of the rich and famous but I went to school with their kids! Growing up in LA, you get pretty inured to the concept of celebrities. They all live there and generally they're people like you and I, just honest folks trying to live their lives. Just going about your life, you just notice them. More so the striking ones like Jamie Lee Curtis since a lot of them are hard to recognize without their makeup.

Bonnie Bedelia was the mother of my best friend in elementary school. Arnold Schwarznegger and Maria Shriver used to play tennis the next court over from my parents back in the day. Saw him later on in Aspen, pretty cool. Met Ben Davidson (former Oakland Raider, played Rexor in Conan the Barbarian) a couple years back, very cool guy. Gene Roddenberry's (Star Trek) son was also in my school. Cool guy, great skier, and an absolute madman!

Went on safari in Africa with the father of the internet (no, its not Al Gore, he wasn't even popping zits yet when Arpanet was up and running!), Len Kleinrock. My dad was a colleague of his and we just happened to run into him on the plane. Without Kleinrock, Funtrivia would simply not exist. Nor any other internet site!

There are dozens more but those are probably the best except for the last.

Coolest of all:

Steven Spielberg (his daughter was in my class) videotaped my high school graduation.

I've met a lot of New Zeland celebrities but the most famous would have to be when I was in primary school and I was part of a group that met Prince Charles and Princess Diana. It was on this trip to New Zealand that Prince William started to crawl!

Subject: Ever know a celebrity personally?

I was just curious if anyone out there has ever known a famous or once famous person personally? The reason I ask, is because the strangest thing has happened to me recently! There is a band that was wildly popular back in the early 1990s, but they have lost some of their fame due to a variety of reasons. Right now they are touring, trying to make a comeback, and I had the pleasure of being able to attend one of their concerts recently. Anyway, to make a long story short, I struck up a friendship with one of the band members, and it's freaking me out! I mean, me, a big nobody, friends with a famous guy! What are the odds? We exchanged phone numbers and chat on the phone, and we are making plans to get together one day soon. I just wondered if any of you have been in this kind of situation before. If so, share your stories here!

LunaLovegood28 My dad knows a Mexican band that performs at weddings and parties and stuff. I don't know them personally, but one time we attended a wedding where the band was playing and they called my dad up to the stage and introduced him to everyone at the wedding as their friend and they took a picture with him.

By the law of averages celebrities mix with enough people so I expect many of us meet one sooner or later, though often at school before they become famous.

My parents were friends with Ron Moody (Fagin in Oliver) at university, and he came to my bar mitzvah if that counts. My grandpa was a musician so half his friends were celebrities, but long ago. I used to meet them sometimes in his shop but was never friends with them. But John Williams, Julian Bream, Tom Conti and Lonnie Donegan etc all came in from time to time and I served some of them which is as close as it got. But I'm still hoping to meet one myself to know and even better be the one other people know.

I do some work for the UFO investigator Nick Pope if he's famous enough although we have rarely met in person.

I met this agent and 'followed' him to this building.
I did not mean to but the agent was speaking to Jim Cummings.
The autograph I got is framed and on my bedroom wall.

Went to school with Martin Rushent (record producer) and Judy Dyble (singer). Talked to Michael Rosen (poet) at Arnos Grove tube station, for ages before I realised who he was - I thought he was an ex. *blush* Upstairs on a London bus, sitting by an open window; another passenger said he'd punch me if I didn't close it, and Gerald Nabarro stopped him. Flew with Tim Brooke-Taylor (Goodies) - well a couple of rows away!

Waiting for someone in central London and so was Bamber Gascoigne, and we chatted while we waited. Lovely man. So different from the very young Roger Kitter, who had performed at a party I was at. He didn't need my congratulations - he was self-congratulatory enough for ten.

Turned round in a tiny shop off Piccadilly and found my nose in Denis Norden's breastbone. Walking through Knightsbridge, spotted "The Lovely" Aimee MacDonald, looking down her nose at the world, so it seemed a shame to tell her that she had a huge smut on hers.

Seeing my son on TV was bizarre. A few years ago, someone was killed in flats near his school. (He'd been waving a chair leg around, and the police thought it was a gun, and shot him.) The BBC didn't have any useful current or archive film, so they went into the school swimming pool, and there he is, in his Speedos and goggles, dripping wet, grinning and running towards the camera. He's also (more recently :-D) been on Anglia TV when his string quartet played for a BBC awards ceremony, and in a college orchestra on Croatian TV.

My brother-in-law went to America in the 60s, made some TV programmes, was VP of United Artists responsible for foreign performers, and was engaged to Carly Simon (briefly!) before she married James Taylor. (That's how I met her brother Peter, who's a photographer.) He got married twice and had two daughters: the older one is a TV and film actress. We haven't met her but we've seen her on imported TV programmes. Even more bizarre, watching a stranger and knowing that she's your niece or cousin.

Not many, if any of you, will know Cuff Burrell. He was a world champion bronc rider in 1929. Later in life, he was a rodeo livestock contractor. My husband used to break horses for him. Hr was a really good fiend of our family. Through him , we met Slim Pickens who also followed the rodeo circuit. He became a world champion rodeo clown long before he became a movie star. It was Cuff Burrell who gave him the name"slim Pickens" Slim Pickens is famous for his role in Dr. Strangelove where he rode the H bomb down to global destruction. He was also in Blazing Saddles and many other movies.

I've seen Hillary Duff WITHOUT her make-up on.
It was the biggest shock of my life!
I asked for an autograph.
I got a signed picture of her and her sister, Haylie Duff.

Not that she's a BIG celebrity but we used to rent a beach house from Vanna White's dad every summer. One summer she was visiting and I got to meet her.

I won backstage tickets to Ginuwine on the radio a few years back. Not such a friendly guy, I must say.
