I have not left the building, just moved to another mansion, as they say in the bible. This is the headline, the articles will follow as always.

Oh, David, I am sorry. It's hard for you to lose your companion, but it's good that he didn't seem to have suffered. I hope you get a new match for yourself soon. Yes, beneficial for both you and the cat. Do you have a preference for male or female?

Thanks Postie, no preference, they all work for me. I just applied for an eight year old tuxedo, it depends whether they mind building work in the house. If so I'll have to wait but it will happen sooner or later.

Don't ask. Why have I been hiding away? My final diploma module was writing two scientific papers, one including advanced statistics. Needless to say with the help of my tutor I failed dismally, as the resit as I'd learnt little else besides the comments on the previous assignments. Luckily we can get a third go, and with a different tutor somehow managed to pass. I can now relax at last, and start my master's dissertation in the autumn once the results are confirmed.

A month ago I finally got the little black cat the charity offered me, but he needed a few months medical treatment before he was fit and healthy so I visited him a few times in his foster home, and after a few weeks hiding is now as affectionate as Victor was, and is nearly 17 now as his owner had to go into a home. It is so good having a little friend with me again.

Apart from the few days a week I look after my mother I'm on school holidays now, and will sign up for my dissertation to start in the autumn which is far less pressure. The cat is very happy and follows me around, and eats more than Victor who was twice his size.

I just played my first game of doubles in tennis for a long time, my usual partner being my father who showed me a good tactic for a supporting player. I lost the first set quite badly but learnt a lot as an opponent played with extreme spin as my father had, and then we changed partners and he was on my side and we scored my first ever 6-0 whitewash, including a left handed return from the tramlines. It was far better playing good opponents or you never improve, even at my advanced age.

I used to love doing the blogs, especially the old ones. After about 18 years I may have a second chance with an ex who was sadly widowed, and has yet not rejected me. As she is isolating it's nearly all been by phone so far but I am hopeful.

As my diploma is finally complete I can relax for a while, well earned, and have applied for the dissertation for November and am waiting to hear back. I've done four long photo trips this year already and quite happy to wait for the next one. I am also waiting to hear if one of my paintings will be exhibited outside the Channel 4 TV offices in Victoria by Grayson Perry as he asked for permission which I gave. Otherwise the builders still do a bit here and there on the house and then disappear for weeks or more, but if they disappear for too long the book will get thrown at him directly.

It must be gratifying to have interest in your art. What type of painting do you paint? My grandmother painted still life. My aunt, mother-in-law, and grandfather-in-law all painted buildings and landscapes. My walls are filled with all their paintings, since I cannot afford an original Dali or Rembrandt. And, I can't paint a straight line, using a ruler. I look, but cannot contribute the empty galleries and walls of the world.

By the way... does your new cat have a name?

Sorry I missed your reply, I thought I checked. The new cat was Marmite, but as I was about to announce his front legs gave way at the weekend, and the vet said it was a nerve issue and he couldn't be treated. He was getting on for 18 as I got hold of his original registration and he was older than we thought. He was the loveliest little black cat and needed a home after being neglected, and we enjoyed 2 1/2 months together. I have already been informed of a new arrival who is coming in three weeks after being on the streets and being rescued, and is only a couple of years old. It's a real shame about Marmite, especially as he was so fit and healthy and still running and jumping around like a kitten. But at 17 it's something which can happen at any time.

Oh, I am sorry. At least Marmite had pleasant companionship and care during his last few months.

I'm looking forward to hearing about the new one.

The new one is very young, friendly and black with white patches, called Sunny. He'll be here in two weeks after his second vaccination. I haven't met him but get reports with pictures, he's very happy to finally be living indoors with people.

I hope you got Sunny - the new sprightly cat you mentioned!

I appear to have been rather overwhelmed with work after my last entry, I had a few attempts before finishing my criminology diploma, and now have three months left to finish my master's dissertation on financial fraud.

Sunny arrived as planned and loves people. He walks up to every visitor purring and is a pleasure to have around. We have a neighbour who rescues cats and dogs, and two of her cats were wandering in just before he arrived, and one found him hiding behind boxes in the conservatory when he first arrived. They soon moved in next door, while a furry black cat decided he preferred it here as the dogs disturbed him and he has been here ever since as well, and is very gentle and loving. He's probably Larry but I'll need it confirmed. Sunny didn't like the competition for a while and complained but in the end he treats him like a member of the household and they always greet each other.

If you look in the TV forum you will see I fulfilled another ambition, finally making it to the BBC Question Time audience on about my 6th attempt. It was a great experience but for reasons unknown Fiona Bruce did not pick me to comment despite having my hand up for half the time. I have posted a Youtube link there if anyone wants to see it. I was behind the first questioner by pure chance so you will see me there. Otherwise I am back doing longer photo trips as the days are longer, and got a matching pair of the rarest remaining road signs in the country in Wales. I never thought I'd manage it as they were one of the designs replaced first after 1964 so those had survived another 59 years.

I am now waiting for the builder to finish my large kitchen extension I have finally got permission for, which had to lower the roof to follow the slope below it to do so. No guesses how long that will take.

My dissertation has just been sent to my tutor for its first draft half way through. I will not focus on the possibilities as she is very thorough and whatever rubbish I may have written she should explain how I can clear it up. I also officially have two cats, since Larry's owner was happy to let him live here (which he decided to do months ago) and with a house full of rescue animals are probably happy to save on about 30 pouches a week. Builders were supposed to start a week ago but still nothing, the upstairs window has been put in but nothing else. And finally I can't remember mentioning an ex who has fairly recently been widowed and is on her own, I am unable to see her much as she has a compromised immune system but we speak regularly, and I have decided I must do my best to create something serious next time I see her, neither of us are getting any younger and why should we both be alone if we don't have to be?

David, you might want to be a bit gentle with the idea of pursuing your recently widowed friend. You didn't say how long she's been widowed, but she does need some time. It took me several years until I was ready to think about dating again, after my husband died... although everyone is different.

So, Sunny and Larry are now brothers. Nice for them to have each other, while you're off photographing signs, and busy writing dissertations :-D

It's been a couple of years and I'm going very slowly, but I think she already knows where I'm heading and hasn't tried to deter me so far. I thought the same thing about the cats. I think Sunny's happier not being on his own the few days a week I'm out, and he has been following Larry around for the last week or so so he isn't nearly as put out as he was at the beginning. Larry always liked him as he chose to come back every day and likes virtually everyone.

I'm sure everyone here is waiting for some updates. I have been busy for months working on my dissertation which I finished nearly a month ago so now have time to do all the other things freely I didn't have time for before. I get the result on Monday and to avoid a less polite term related to bodily functions I am doing my pieces.

I did make my offer as planned, and the answer was that she is still grieving for her husband, but she didn't say no either. She now knows if she wants to she needn't be alone and I will simply see what happens without any further pressure from my side.

Otherwise if anyone has followed my partial house demolition five years ago I now have permission to keep all the existing structures (the previous roof had to go) besides a small slice from the kitchen roof which has been done. If the builder finally gets going my house only has a month or so work left altogether, but working once or twice a month at the moment is maybe another five years. But I have more time to organise it now.

I needed a rest after my degree. After two weeks today was the first I didn't have to go anywhere, besides going out taking photos people have needed me every other day till now. I started sending out my new CV and making work offers a day or two after the result and picked up an interview right away which I will be recording next month, and quite possibly a second one which may end up on TV. I also tidied my lounge (still a building site) after a long time. I have no idea if the woman I am after will ever decide to be with another man but she knows I'm here if she does.

I've just heard about the new chat format, glad the blogs are still here. My long awaited dental appointment is in two days and hope the broken tooth can be repaired with the least possible stress. It's one thing growing hair back but it is technically possible to grow new teeth by electrical stimulation of specific dermal cells. In fact the body can do it already but normally in benign tumours. But our skin retains a permanent ability to grow teeth and new hair but so far they don't seem to have exploited that ability under a controlled way.

The weather has finally turned cold meaning the cats are indoors most of the time and are very happy sitting on their favourite beds and boxes and Sunny very rarely tells Larry off now. They do get on well outdoors and walk and sit together a lot as well as with the cats Larry used to live with at the back. Sadly a few have died or been killed recently, and two lifelong pairs have been broken up by a car and a dog respectively, while one died and another simply vanished. None were connected so it was all very unfortunate.

I now have time to pursue all my other areas which were curtailed during my degree, primarily finding a partner. No one yet besides the few ones I know but the only one with long term potential is still getting over her loss, and besides getting dark earlier my 5th gear has gone, meaning I can't drive far till it's repaired. Lucky it didn't happen till now.

Nothing else of note so far, it will be here if it happens.

Thanks Jonno. It takes a level of patience and determination as well as constant focus. I began one in evening classes in 1985 and was too much to keep going, and always wished I had done. Online degrees were exactly what I needed.
