Subject: Your age when you read the first book?

Posted by: debimore
Date: Feb 16 08

I ask this because I ordered the first 3 books from my book club, hoping to get my youngest son to start reading. Instead, I was the one hooked, and my daughter, as well. I finished the last book in September-I'm 43.

My friend gave the second and third book to me for my 13th birthday. Although I wasn't the first person in my family to read them, as my mom took them away and read them in one day while I was doing my homework :)

One of my students put the first novel on my desk and said, "You have to read this book!" I avoided it for weeks because I thought it was just a kids' book. He keep badgering me to read it, so I finally took it home and started to read it that evening. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep that night; I was hooked. By the time the second book came out the buzz had really started here in the U.S. I awaited the publication of each new novel as eagerly as the kids. Unlike, say, the "Twilight" series, they really are wonderfully written.

I was around 38 years old when I read the first Harry Potter novel around 1998. I was wondering what all the fuss was about among the local kids in the bookstores and libraries.

I was 19, and working at a local newspaper.

I covered one of the book releases and decided to read them after.

I was 8 when I read the first book, but I never really read the rest of the series until I was 9.

Books have always been important to me and my father set a great store in being able to read. I started school at 5-1/2 and I was able to read and write before I went to school. My father used to buy little books for me to read and I remember having those little Golden Books. I think I can safely say I was probably 4 when I read my first book.

I read the first Harry Potter at age 71! I immediately went to the bookstore and bought the whole series.

I was 45 and a school teacher. I wanted to check if it was good reading for my little pupils. For many of them it appeared to be the book to discover reading is fun, not torture! Unfortunately, the Russian Orthodox Church interfered and the book became unpopular with believers’ families. I think many educationalists just recognized themselves in Dolores Umbridge! I’m afraid I’m much like her myself, no matter how hard I’ve been trying to be like Mary Poppins!

18. My mom wouldn't let us read them. So i hide out in the horse pasture and read the first 3. Then my younger brother told on me. We discussed it with our priest. Turned out he loved them and had no problem with us reading them. Read the rest of them in few weeks. When Deathly Hallows was released, i read it in a day.

34. My daughter loved them so I tried fading them and got hooked. We use to spend hours discussing characters, plot, character motivation. We went to the midnight showing of the last three movies too.

I asked my niece what she was reading and when she said its about a boy and magic I asked if I could read it after her. I was in my 30s at that time. Now I'm in my 70s with all 7 books and watch the movies whenever they are on the television.

I was 9 years old. That was back in the '90s before the first movie came out and no one seemed to know how to pronounce "Hermione". Heard a lot of people in Ohio at the time calling her "hermy-own".

I've read the whole series straight through at least 3 times (once the week before college exams when I really should have been studying instead) and I have copies of the books in English and Italian. Working my way through the series in Italian after learning it college and picking up the books from a small shop in Florence, Italy on vacation one year.

Re-reading them as an adult with a new perspective, I definitely got a lot more out of them than when I was 9 and didn't understand everything! There were a lot of jokes in some of the early books that came out when I was in elementary school that went way over my head under I did that college re-read. Chamber of Secrets was a much better book at 18 than it was at 10.
