Subject: The saddest book you've ever read

Posted by: Zann03

Me? Sadako, the story of a girl who died of leukemia. She tries to get better by folding a thousand paper cranes, but she dies. Once, a teacher was reading it to my class, and she couldn't finish it because she was sniffing so hard.

The Well of Lonliness by Radclyffe Hall...an insight into the struggle for survival of gay women at a time when they were thought to be inverts..so sad..one of the characters actually starves to death before anyone would think of helping her.Couldn't read it again far too heart wrenching.

Still Old Yeller for me. Not just about a dog with rabies, but where a child has to watch his best friend die. A hard life during those times and then to lose his dog too. Gets me everytime.

On the Beach every time - I think it's the only book where everyone dies, not one person is left alive at the end, and I cry buckets every time I read it, starting about the middle and literally sobbing by the end. I still love it though, but I have to "be in the mood" to read it.

Well, these books are really good. They make me cry, but not because of bad things (most of the time)

Angela's Ashes, By Frank McCourt. It's a true story of an Irish family. It's just so heart breaking, at times it will make you laugh, but it's so sad.

Right now I'm reading "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. There are some things in here that are pretty depressing. But it is a very good book.

Behind the Scences is so bad. Its about a girl in the circus whose mother dies, so she has to live with her horrible father. I would encourage everyone to read it though, you won't regret it.

I'd have to say Brisingr. One of the best characters die. Though I was expecting the death, the way it happened was heartbreaking. (sobs)

Time traveller's wife was a bit of a romantic weepy.
The lovely bones was a beautiful tale of death, just singing it's joy and pain through the lives of others.
The book that truly made me the saddest this year though was Peralandra - simply because C.S.Lewis missed so many opportunities, and nullified a potentially awesome trilogy. Crying even now just thinking about it:-)

I remember crying whilst reading the last in the Pellinor series by Alison Croggon: The Singing. Also whilst reading the 'Dragon Keeper Series' by Carole Wilkinson. I sat for about ten minutes after finishing the last in that contented state where you're crying but satisfied with the ending. Serenity I guess. I would definitely recommend.

"The Bridges of Madison County", "Prince of Tides" and "The Outsiders" are all guaranteed to leave me a sobbing wreck...

Oh, "The Outsiders", that was a good one. We had to read it last year in school, and it was really good, but sad.

As much as people put them down, "Twilight" and "New Moon" are very sad and brought me to tears many times. Another Stephenie Meyer book with the power is "The Host", which is absolutely unbelievable.

I really thought that "The boy in the Striped Pajamas" was extremely sad because it explains to you the horrors of WWII and because Bruno and Shmuel die in the end. :( (Tear)

The ending of "Flowers for Algernon" is very sad, but I loved the book anyway. "Night" and "All Quiet on the Western Front" were also depressing, albeit for a different reason.
