Subject: The saddest book you've ever read

Posted by: Zann03

Me? Sadako, the story of a girl who died of leukemia. She tries to get better by folding a thousand paper cranes, but she dies. Once, a teacher was reading it to my class, and she couldn't finish it because she was sniffing so hard.

I don't know about saddest, but the most depressing, horrifying book was Johnny Got His Gun. I cannot read it again but I will never forget it. True horror.

I just read Caseena's post and laughed because we both said "I don't know about sad, but most depressing", lol. Swear I didn't read that until after I posted.

I know it was a little mushy, but "The Bridges of Madison County" would be a candidate

I'm reading a very sad book right now. It's called "Tell My Sons" by Lt.Col. Mark M. Weber. I was in tears by page 7! :(

Three Comrades by Erich Maria Remarque. One of the few books I've ever cried over.

Most of the Wereworld series. The last book was so utterly depressing, I cried through most of it.

I agree with both of the ladies' posts right before this. Flowers For Algernon has probably the saddest ending I've read, but the book is remarkably written and a classic in every sense of the word.

I haven't read it since I was a kid, but "Where the Red Fern Grows" has stuck with me since I was 11 or 12.
