I'm on board with the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. The Dark Tower (Stephen King crawled out of the horror genre to write something really compelling and excellent). Anne of Green Gables. Otherwise, I'm new to series. I usually read everything a particular author has out, but avoid a series (for no reason I can think of)? I'll start on something you've recommended here. Thanks :) Reply #61. Mar 04 11, 6:33 PM |

Does anyone know the Stephen King novel that precedes The Dark Tower? Roland first appears in that novel, I hear. Reply #62. Mar 04 11, 7:00 PM |

Roland appears in one of King's short story collections. "Everything's Eventual", I believe. Reply #63. Mar 05 11, 8:59 AM |

I will check that re Roland, thanks! I've been thinking about series and the unique experience of reading them. For instance, when they end. It's especially hard to see those characters go. Reply #64. Mar 05 11, 9:30 PM |

Not even close:The Spenser novels by the late, great Robert B. Parker...I read them all (62 or 63 I believe). You'll love them as you read tham and after you've read them: great characters, great pathos, great wit...not the greatest or most original stories but it doesn't matter a bit...they are wonderful. I cried (and I'm 70 years old ) when RBP died a few months ago...we lost a national treasure Reply #65. Aug 25 11, 9:31 PM |

The "Dresden Files" series by Jim Butcher The "Black Jewels" series by Anne Bishop Any "PERN" book by Anne McCaffrey The "Mistborn" series by Brandon Sanderson The "Darkover" series by Marion Zimmer Bradley That's it for the moment. The best and favorites routinely circulate for me but those are the best at the moment. Reply #67. Nov 30 11, 2:53 PM |

The Daughters of England series by Phillipa Carr ( also known as Jean Plaidy) there were 17 books I think in the series beginning with The Witch from the Sea. It traces the history of one family from the time of William the Conqueror up to World War 1. I can recommend them if you can get your hands on them. Reply #72. Jul 30 12, 9:23 PM |

I liked The Narnia Chronicles. I surprised that no one mentioned The Dune Series by Frank Herbert. One of these days i WILL read The Dark Tower series, just got to make time for it. Reply #73. Jul 30 12, 9:56 PM |

I also love the "Jack Reacher" books by Lee Child, and I didn't miss one of Ed McBain's tales of the 87th (or 86th) Precinct. Another great series is the one featuring "Gabriel Allon" whose guise is that of an art restorer as he secretly works for the Mossad, author is Daniel Silva. Reply #76. Sep 06 12, 3:27 PM |
