Subject: Who is your personal hero?

Posted by: Cymruambyth
Date: Mar 28 09

From the pages of history, my heroes are Jesus (even though we have no real historical record of him), Simon de Montfort, William Wilberforce, Lady Hester Stanhope (she may have been off her nut, but she was a brilliant, independent woman), Emmeline Pankhurst and Canada's Famous Five (Henrietta Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Irene Parlby), who fought for the recognition of women as persons.

Modern-day heroes - Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Obviously, I'm rather fond of radicals.

Yours?

The generation who lived through the trauma of WW2 but also everyday people who carry on being supportive and caring for their families and others in the face of life's difficulties and sadnesses.

Also people in the caring professions who look after others often under a lot of pressure and facing drunks and violent behaviour.

The matriarchs of my family are my heroes.

They provided powerful examples of how people should be respected and treated with kindness.

I miss them.

For the past year or two, I have been reading every book I can find about American submariners during WWII. Those men were so brave it gives me goosebumps just to read about the things they did. The two men who impressed me the most were Johnny Moore and Mush Morton. Neither made through the war, but they sure made the Japanese pay. Here's a link about Mush Morton (warning: adult language)

And one about John Moore

Sir Ernest Shackleton. His story is magnificent. It always chokes me up. One of the finest human beings who ever lived. Everyone else pales in comparison.

Anyone who gives of their self, poor or rich, to help others.

Even if it's just a friendly word. That can make all the difference.

But not patronisingly so. It has to come from the heart.

The man that stood up and was willing to lose absolutely everything he had worked so hard for, and stand by his beliefs. "Muhammad ali"

My mum.
After my dad died (my sister and I were just kids), she worked long hard hours to keep a roof over our heads and never once complained or showed her grief in front of us.
She sadly lost her life to motor neurone disease a few years ago, and was brave and loving till the end,

Looks like hekawi took the words right out of my mouth. Other than that, naturally Rob Halford.

Rose McGowan; I read her book and it confirmed how "Brave" she really is. She is giving victims a voice.

On a more personal level, my sister. She was diagnosed with MS in 2009. Despite working full-time, she attends meetings, sees a specialist, and makes sure she takes her medicine religiously, and always has it in stock. She's my hero because truly, she's the strongest one in the family. She stands up for us, fights for us, and on top of it all, she volunteers her time and money helping animals.

Impossible to pick one because many from different areas of life inspire me.
Sport = Muhammad Ali (A genius who broke the mold and stood up for what he believed in)
Music = Stevie Wonder (Musical genius)
Life = Martin Luther King (Most inspiring speker who made a difference)
Movies = Bruce Lee (He changed how movies were made forever)
