Subject: Who is your personal hero?

Posted by: Cymruambyth
Date: Mar 28 09

From the pages of history, my heroes are Jesus (even though we have no real historical record of him), Simon de Montfort, William Wilberforce, Lady Hester Stanhope (she may have been off her nut, but she was a brilliant, independent woman), Emmeline Pankhurst and Canada's Famous Five (Henrietta Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Irene Parlby), who fought for the recognition of women as persons.

Modern-day heroes - Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Obviously, I'm rather fond of radicals.

Yours?

It's ok, Boxjaw. Maybe you were just having a bad day, it happens! I've seen lots of your other posts before & have never noticed them being rude or obnoxious. We all make mistakes & say things we regret later & didn't mean!

Roseanne Barr is my hero.
Hear me out... I come from a long line of hushed women; believers of speak and incur the man's wrath; men and women who are of one narrow-mind. There was no hope for me, I was doomed to that generational curse. It is nine years ago now; I was 14 and I became a fan of "Roseanne" (the show). I soon realized Roseanne was sending a message to womankind and humanity alike; and I heard that message loud and clear. Roseanne taught me that women are strong, strong in every since of the word, that not only can I say what's on my mind, I can scream it if I'd like.

"If we were to see one flying woman, we would instantly know how to rise and join her- for she could speak to us in our own tongue with the magic instructions-" -Roseanne

Other than Christ, my late father is my personal hero. He embodied generosity, wisdom & integrity. I shouldn't have been surprised when 1500 people showed up for his wake in a small town in New England.

Looking back at some of the things that really impressed me growing up. The Astronauts and Cosmonauts were always heroic in my book. Especially the men and women that pioneered the whole thing in the sixties. Intelligent daredevils all of them. Also, the two gentlemen who went to the deepest depths of the ocean in 1960.

My brother, known here as 'reeshy'. He's gone through so much and is still smiling :)

Helen Keller is also very, very inspirational!

I'll have to say I'm impressed with/inspired by Alexx and reeshy. They're intelligent and thoughtful, and they give me hope that the future is in good hands.

Terry Fox,an ordinary guy who done an extraordinary feat, whose ripples are still being felt across this beautiful country.Whenever i feel like complaining,i think of what he did, what he suffered,it quickly puts things into perspective for me
Suffering must needs meaning.

I have met just a few truly inspirational people during my lifetime so far, but only one truly stands out as a teacher and, later in life, a friend. My personal hero is a man called Mr Friedrich Samuels who was my geography master at school. Born into a jewish family just after the end of the Great War, he and his entire family were transported to Auschwitz in the 1940's. He was the only survivor. He would show all his new students his number tattooed onto his forearm and would take the time to recount his experiences to anyone who would ask him what it meant. On his death many, many hundreds of his former pupils attended his funeral, myself included. A large number of which had travelled from all over the world to be there.

A modest, unassuming and heroic member of our human race.

De Gaulle (reluctantly). I am also rather fond of Winston Churchill.
Shakespeare, Dostoyevski, Chesterton, Simone Veil, Saint Francis of Assisi, Joan of Arc...
And all the ordinary people that are brave, cheery and generous and make this world a better place to live in.

One of my heroes would be my father-in-law. He was born in Ukraine and knew at a young age that Communism was no way to live a life. When WW2 began he was forced into the Russian army as a Captain. He was captured by the Germans and spent a few years in a prisoner-of-war camp, thinking he wouldn't make it out alive. While being transferred by train to another prison, he jumped off the train knowing that either he could die from injuries or be shot dead by surveillance guards. He also knew he'd never see his family again and that they would have to face the consequences (punishment) of his decision.

He didn't know where he was and his only possession was a photo of his parents, but he walked across Europe to freedom and eventually made it to New York with less than a dollar in his pocket. He spent decades working with the U.S. military and broadcasting to countries behind the Iron Curtain. He's now in his 90s and living a good life in Florida. No critical comments can be made about U.S. democracy in his presence, he just won't tolerate it. :)

Wow, wyambezi, your father-in-law is quite an inspiration. Your wife must be enormously proud of her father (as are you, clearly.)

Thanks Jabb. He's one of the most intelligent people I've met and we're all proud of him. He's my husband's father, but there's no way you could know that. :)
