Subject: Who is your personal hero?

Posted by: Cymruambyth
Date: Mar 28 09

From the pages of history, my heroes are Jesus (even though we have no real historical record of him), Simon de Montfort, William Wilberforce, Lady Hester Stanhope (she may have been off her nut, but she was a brilliant, independent woman), Emmeline Pankhurst and Canada's Famous Five (Henrietta Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Irene Parlby), who fought for the recognition of women as persons.

Modern-day heroes - Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Obviously, I'm rather fond of radicals.

Yours?

One lady that needs a mention here is Fiona Woods. Who is Fiona Woods I hear being asked? Here in Australia she is much admired for her work with people in disasters from all over the world who have been seriously burned. She has performed absolute miracles in some cases. She was made Australian of the year a couple of years ago This is a lady who works solely for the benefit of her fellow human beings and to me she is more than worthy of all the praise heaped upon her. The quiet, ordinary person that does what's right and doesn't stick around for credit or glory.

Jimmy Wayne; if I ever think I'm going to fail at something, I think about how he never gives up and it gives me the strength to keep trying.

A bit of a cliché, but people who "pay it forward".

I also have a profound admiration for philanthropists who don't self-publicize - who get to know community leaders and listen to their concerns, as opposed to simply throwing money at the problem.

I am very excited - next week, I am going to a conference where Sue Gordon is one of the keynote speakers.
Sue is an Indigenous woman, one of the first to be appointed a magistrate, and in 2002 was appointed to head an inquiry into family violence and child abuse in Western Australian Aboriginal communities.
What an opportunity to hear someone who has achieved so much for our people.

Well done! ROLF, and I have never used that term anywhere before. Very timely and witty.
