Subject: 100 Nouns (1) - COMPLETE

Posted by: trident

Hi all. Now that we have new badges for single questions, it is time for us to start a game for them to help inspire us here in the Lounge. Writing single questions is much faster than quiz writing, so we need lots of prompts...100 perhaps? This is how the game works. I will give two lists, each with 50 items. The first list will contain generic nouns that might be pretty easy to work into a question in many different ways. These would be words like clock, strawberry, or heart. The second list has much more specific words that are likely going to have to be directly about that topic (unless you can find an inventive way to make them about something else). This list would include things like Mount Kilimanjaro, Ulysses S. Grant, and barometric pressure. Some of the entries on this second list will be something you might need to research a little!

Authors must choose a word from each list, one generic and one specific, and write one question about each. Once you claim a word from a list, it is no longer available for other players to claim it. All nouns eventually have to be claimed before the series can end, so you better choose the one you want early! Once you have written your two questions and submitted them to the queue, you are free to choose two more. It might be good manners not to keep choosing too many in a row too quickly, allowing others a chance at the list. Submitting and claiming words will mostly be on the honor system. You must submit the two questions to the queue before claiming any more. I will occasionally be checking the queue to make sure authors are actually submitting questions with their chosen nouns. Happy single questioning!

Last note: After writing and submitting the questions to the queue, we would appreciate it if players could then post in the thread which category each of their questions went to. This is will allow us to verify submissions much quicker!

Not a glitch; just a result of manual HTML tagging.

Six pairs to go! What pair will be the last remaining? What will happen when we reach the end of the list?

ALL THIS AND MORE.

I think there will be a problem with the last few pairs..Players might want to write for one word but not the other...

I don't really see it as a problem; part of these games is to push people out of their comfort zones. If there were other words they wanted to claim, it's first-come-first-serve.

Let me amend that last post for accuracy's sake. I submitted the one about "yarn" and attempted to submit the one about "His Girl Friday" but the filter on the single-questions submission site would not allow more than five questions to be pending editor review at once. It was y'all who urged me to get off my ??lemu (Hawaiian; you can look it up) and write some single questions. Might it not be friendlier to suspend the five-question rule during this period of intense compositional furor?

Unfortunately, any suspension would be done by Terry alone-- it's hardwired into the single question submission process. Even editors are bound by the rule.

That said, I can't imagine this being a one-off thing.

I really appreciate your efforts to help out, FatherSteve! I am glad you came over here to the Lounge and wrote questions. "His Girl Friday" is yours. You do not need to have it submitted to the queue to claim it, though to claim new words you must have your previous words submitted to the queue.
