Subject: 100 Nouns (1) - COMPLETE

Posted by: trident

Hi all. Now that we have new badges for single questions, it is time for us to start a game for them to help inspire us here in the Lounge. Writing single questions is much faster than quiz writing, so we need lots of prompts...100 perhaps? This is how the game works. I will give two lists, each with 50 items. The first list will contain generic nouns that might be pretty easy to work into a question in many different ways. These would be words like clock, strawberry, or heart. The second list has much more specific words that are likely going to have to be directly about that topic (unless you can find an inventive way to make them about something else). This list would include things like Mount Kilimanjaro, Ulysses S. Grant, and barometric pressure. Some of the entries on this second list will be something you might need to research a little!

Authors must choose a word from each list, one generic and one specific, and write one question about each. Once you claim a word from a list, it is no longer available for other players to claim it. All nouns eventually have to be claimed before the series can end, so you better choose the one you want early! Once you have written your two questions and submitted them to the queue, you are free to choose two more. It might be good manners not to keep choosing too many in a row too quickly, allowing others a chance at the list. Submitting and claiming words will mostly be on the honor system. You must submit the two questions to the queue before claiming any more. I will occasionally be checking the queue to make sure authors are actually submitting questions with their chosen nouns. Happy single questioning!

Last note: After writing and submitting the questions to the queue, we would appreciate it if players could then post in the thread which category each of their questions went to. This is will allow us to verify submissions much quicker!

I submitted 'monitor' and 'anthracite' in Sci/Tech. The last two left.

Angikar, the only requirement is that the question contains that term in some way or that the noun is the answer to the question. You are free to be creative, but the term should have a reason to be in the question, not just tacked on awkwardly.

PS angikar, check your question about anthracite, as it doesn't seem to be using the correct term. I am unsure if that was intentional.

Umm..Yes. The question is about anthracene, the major constituent of anthracite. It's not allowed?

Then, I guess my proposed catalytic converter question won't be accepted as well.

Do one thing. The anthracene question is submitted. Let that stand. Free up copper(A), catalytic converter (B).

I had submitted monitor (A). Anthracite(B) was supposed to go with it. Then, free up anthracite (B) and I will take up Lake Baikal (B) instead.

That should settle everything. Sorry for the trouble.

Just make sure the word anthracite is somewhere in the question, then it can qualify.

Any case, free up copper and catalytic converter. My catalytic converter question isn't that good I believe. If anthracene is okay, good to go. If and only if that doesn't count for anthracene, I will take up Baikal.

I think the solution is simple:

1. Contact a Sci/Tech editor and ask them to make a change to your single question, adding "anthracite" to it.

2. We will return copper and catalytic converter.

3. If you want to claim Lake Baikal, please find a generic noun to go with it.

Now that everyone has had a chance to jump in, I am going to claim "bayou" and "Huey Teocalli" for myself.

With less than half the pairs to go, I've highlighted the remaining nouns.

Also, I think I'll take both Goblin and "I Believe I Can Fly", both for Movies.

I've submitted my questions to Geography (bayou) and World (Huey Teocalli).

For authors who have only done one set, feel free to claim more if there is anything holding you back. There are always more prompts that can be written up.

I'm sorry, I haven't understood, is this based on speed? I have claimed two more words but I seem to not be able to write them as quickly as most of you. Is this a problem?

player avatar
Nope! The opposite actually. The questions don't have to be rushed for an author to claim them. I have noticed that some players took one set of words, submitted to the queue and haven't claimed another pair. If any of those players are hesitant to claim another pair because they think they might take too long to write the questions, they should feel free to go ahead and claim them, even if they might not get written right away.

I've just got round to submitting the pair I claimed last week.
Rose & Edvard Munch have both gone to the humanities category.

I feel somewhat bad about claiming two more words, as I have already claimed three pairs. However, if this is not too much of a problem, I'd like to claim "copper" and "Suleiman the Magnificent".
