I believe all should keep their family history alive, if you know it. If you don't, your experiences are important to keep alive. Can we share some?
I'll start...

Wish I had a dollar for every worthwhile post I've made that has gone completely ignored around here, Mark. Not saying I could travel the world on it, but I bet I could come very close to getting a free month's rent out of the deal.

Sorry Mark but I believe the laws are probably different here in Canada. Great you got the information though. It is going to help somebody. The more we learn the better. Thanks

A rather interesting thread and demonstrates the varied backgrounds. For my part both of my parents were born in England in 1912....sound familiar? Should be, both born in April, Dad one week prior to the sinking of the Titanic and Mother one week after the sinking. Of course both of them Aries and neither fitted the blurb on supposed Aries traits.
I was born here in Western Australia back in the first half of the last century. I have seen many changes, some good, some not. But it has been an interesting life and I am far from done yet.

A few months ago, I learned that my great-great-great-grandfather was a member of a group of people who basically just raided other places; burning, killing, destroying, kidnapping anyone or anything in their wake. I learned that I'm part Turkish because of these pillaging adventures, as the aforementioned relative kidnapped a girl on a raid in Turkey and took her home to be his wife after his first wife left him so she could safely practice Christianity (the group he was in hated most religions).
Definitely not a wholesome family story, but a fascinating part of my family history that I've been trying to dig into further.

The originator of this thread has passed away, and every time someone innocently posts something interesting on here, I am sad. Not because of what they posted, but because mpkitty is no longer with us.
RIP mpkitty

Thanks to ancestry sites and DNA tests I've managed to go back about seven generations to the early 19th century. My father was uncertain about his mother's family origins as they had been here for generations, but that is now confirmed to be the same as his father's (except for the town which hasn't yet been located) as Lithuania, as when Jews came from the Baltic states they either went to Hull to stay in England, or to cross to America via Liverpool. They went to Manchester and like most others there came from Lithuania while the Polish Jews were more likely to dock at Tilbury like my mother's family.

I only found this year my grandma wasn't meant to be here, her mother went to emigrate via England to America to be with her brother, but was pregnant and gave birth to her oldest sister while here and decided to settle down in London, where we still live. My father came here when his parents moved to Essex when he was five. The most recent arrival was my grandpa who came to London where he met my grandma at their first job, when he was five from Poland. His wife's family came from Bialystock, which is Polish Russia as the border changes so often. I currently am the last known person with my original surname as all the uncles had daughters, but may have found a potential candidate with a third cousin from Manchester if he exists (ie I found a female who contacted me but didn't reply to my question of her maiden name which probably is the same one). So if she has a brother I will finally discover someone left apart from me as I didn't have children.

we don 't know much about body 's family... except hometown was west of where we live. no knowledge about who the father is (we were told to stop asking years ago becaus it wasn 't a happy story). her mother has a brother still living, &they have a lot of cousins. all their uncles passed years ago, as did their aunts (well... apart from one that married into the family).
far as the orignal thread owner, we believe it a great tribute2her memory whenever someone comments (though we missed alot apparently...) it always saddens us2learn anyone passed on, however we can still hold onto whatever memories we have of her.
