Mark, thats exactly what Im saying. And these companies do "leak" information. I read an article about it. People are urged to be cautious with these things. Some companies are doing their own research, some are working with researchers, and some are just looking to make as much money as possible. Reply #41. Jul 02 18, 3:46 PM |

It seems right to be wary of DNA tests. They say that genetic testing can be helpful for understanding your genetic risk factors and the inherited conditions that are contained within your genetic information. However, as far as I am aware it isn't clear how this might affect medical or life insurance, for instance. If you know from a DNA test that you have an inherited condition (even though you may be without symptoms) and don't declare it on your application form, does that mean the insurance company could deny a claim for expenses related to that condition because you didn't declare a pre-existing condition or risk factor ? Or if you declare it, could you have a loading on your premium and need to pay more ? Reply #42. Jul 02 18, 6:21 PM |

Or if you DID know and didn't declare, how are they going to prove that you knew? I guess ignorance is bliss in some cases. Reply #43. Jul 02 18, 6:27 PM |

I certainly wouldn't put it past insurance companies to buy information from the DNA testing companies, who would no doubt be happy with a second revenue stream. Reply #44. Jul 02 18, 6:31 PM |

Also, the science is still so new. They are just beginning to map the genome, which means companies who claiim they know all are blowing smoke. Again, it's all about money. And you never know who they're sharing information with. Even if they ask you specific questions, how do you really know if what they tell you is correct or not? And what if you don't have symptoms of something because you're a carrier. Imagine what pharmaceutical companies or insurance could do with that. Reply #45. Jul 02 18, 7:32 PM |

Since when are you calling me "Sad wings," Stephanie? Are we not on a first name basis any more? :-( That reminds me of how I was joking around somewhere around here a while back about how "Sad Wings" was really my real name, and that it was short for "Sad Wings of by God Heavy Metal Destiny." Can you imagine someone naming their kid something like that? When I was in high school in Arkansas, there was a local politician named Larry DerryBerry. Of all the names to pick out for your child to grow up with like that. Think I would have to change my name on that one. Reply #50. Jul 02 18, 11:13 PM |

I was aware of the possible drawbacks of getting my DNA profile done and I held back for a long time. I finally decided to go ahead with it. I think it's an important asset to science, outweighing the *possible* abuses (for which we do need to be vigilant). Reply #52. Jul 03 18, 12:01 PM |

What a great story, Stephanie. Such wonderful memories to have and treasure throughout your life. I wish I knew much more about my family history than I do, but unfortunately I don't. But I can live with that because I know that most of us will all live in the same family together one day, the way it was meant to be from the very beginning of time. Reply #57. Jul 12 18, 2:26 PM |

I wish I could tell you about my grandmother's 100th birthday celebration, but that won't be for a little over 9 more months. Reply #60. Aug 23 18, 8:19 AM |
