I believe all should keep their family history alive, if you know it. If you don't, your experiences are important to keep alive. Can we share some?
I'll start...

I had an Aunt who lived to be nearly 105 and one who lived to be nearly 103 and one who lived to be 92 but I'm pretty certain I won't live that long. Also all the men in the same family (4 of them) did not make it past 75.

An interesting blog. Hubby and I did the DNA testing through Ancestry.com and we found the results very interesting. It confirmed what I already knew regarding my ethnic background (almost entirely British and Western European). Hubby, on the other hand, has just about every ethnic group imaginable in his profile. The results would appear to be accurate based on what we know of our family backgrounds.

My husband's mother turned 97 last month. She has always led a very sedentary lifestyle, never gets any exercise, and has always had a crappy diet that largely consists of convenience/junk food, cookies and sweets. Despite that, she does not suffer from any of the illnesses one typically associates with the elderly - no diabetes, Parkinson's, dementia, heart disease, cancer, emphysema etc - only mild arthritis. She must have great genes!

Now there's the proverbial can of worms!

I think 'seems men are the weaker sex' was based on my info about the longevity of my aunts compared to the longevity of my uncles.
My grandmother on that side was also long lived (94). The reason the men were the weaker sex in health terms, including my grandfather, was that they all got cancer. One aunt did get cancer and died younger than the others too. I have had cancer, but luckily survived it (so far anyway - 16 years).

You have survived this long, Mix, who knows, you may have many, many more years left. I hope so! :-)

By the "men must be the weaker sex" thing, Stephanie, if you mean that men don't live as long as women, that is true in general terms, but that is because of all the stress in their lives caused by women. :-p I'm only kidding!

So how much ya bench, Stephanie? Hmm? Heh? Come on, tell us - how much ya bench? That's just some silly stuff from these old skits on Saturday Night Live where these weightlifter guys would sit around like on a panel and talk about weightlifting and guys would call in and they would ask them "how much ya bench" you know, as in bench press. It was all really silly like all their skits but they were kind of funny. I'm gonna go see if I can find some of them right now! :-)

Okay, Stephanie, all you have to do is Google "how much ya bench snl" and a couple of those skits will pop up. There is one with a guy with a shirt that says "pitbull" on it. You probably can't tell because of the hair and makeup, but that is Emilio Estevez. You just take a look at that skit and then tell me who is the weaker sex. :-p

Why do married men die younger on average than their wives?

Because they want to !

Know what the difference is between a married man and a single man? A single man comes home, goes to the fridge and says "Ah, same old stuff" and then goes to bed. A married man comes home, goes to bed and says "Ah, same old stuff" and then goes to the fridge.

Katey, when I was married, I had Roseanne Barr for a mother-in-law. Might as well have been. This woman kind of looked like Roseanne, she actually talked like Roseanne with the same kind of high-pitched nasal whine, and she pretty much had the same kind of annoying personality as Gross-anne. No joke.

MotherGoose.... all I can say is, holy crap. Wonder how she manages.
In my family, these things are variable. I'm not sure anyone made it to 90; 81 mmight be the oldest (Grandmother). I won't bother with "sides" because I only know mother. One man (great uncle) died at 43; history of heart attacks and "sudden deaths."
Some of you crack me up...

I come from long-lived stock. Having said that, I will probably keel over tomorrow :)

My father died rather suddenly of a massive heart attack out of nowhere at the age of 54. He had no known risk factors (family history, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol - none of them.) His father had died at 80, his mother actually survived him and lived to be 93. That was 25 years ago. I just turned 55.

I don't know about Mother Goose, Jaz, but I wonder about Lady Madonna with all those children at her feet. I wonder how she manages to make ends meet? I mean, first of all, Friday night arrives without a suitcase, then you've got Sunday morning creeping like a nun. Always new things developing as Monday's child has learned to tie his bootlace. See how they run?

Mark, that wasn't Hans and Franz that I was talking about, but these guys are all made up with the stuffing or whatever they use to make them look like they have huge muscles just like Hans and Franz, but these other guys I'm talking about are all sitting in chairs and they are all huge and muscly from the waist up with these little tiny stick legs poking out of them. They are hilarious just to look at! You have really got to check this stuff out, bro. Just enter "how much ya bench snl" and then click on the one with the guy wearing the shirt that says "pitbull" on it. I like to use Bing as my search engine and I'm not sure if you would get different results using another, but that is a really funny skit. Have you looked at that stuff yet, Stephanie? Those guys will show you who the weaker sex is. :-p All of you who read this need to check that skit out, it will be good for you. Guaranteed laughs! I'm gonna go check it out again myself. :-)
