Subject: Turn to page 21

Turn to page 21 of the book you're reading, and tell us what the first full sentence on the page is.

"Dave put the sandwich down on the road, stood up, and walked away." (p.21 of Stuart Maclean's 'Vinyl Cafe Diaries', a collection of short stories. This quote is from 'Walking Man.')

What a co-incidence. The first sentence on page 21 of the book I'm reading is 'I'm making him some sandwiches'. Too short? The second sentence is 'Want me to make you some?'.

From 'The Winter of Our Discontent' by John Steinbeck.

Bringing it back to food ...

I've no idea what the first sentence of page 21 is. The book I started on Saturday is in the kitchen and I'm too lazy to go get it. The kitchen relates to food, right?

Yea, the book I started this morning mentions food, glorious food, sort of anyway:

In the theatres or in the shops, or on his daily walks, Harry observed women as one did wild birds, noted the elegance or occasional strangeness of their fashions and the way their behaviors changed depending on whether they were alone or in company, with a man or with other women.

What a fascinating thread. I wish I'd thought of it. Bare with me, I'm reading four books right now:

"Ed, quit it!" Ralph said. He used the loud but steadily firm voice he assumed one used with people who were having hysterics." "You're all right! Just quit it!" -- "Insomnia" by Stephen King (Because when you have it, might as well read about it.)

"It's difficult, isn't it? I might be a distant cousin with a quaint sense of humour, in which case you'll look silly if you scream. I might be a well-known cretin to be kept from your guests at all costs. Or I might be -- oh no, my angel!" -- "The Game Of Kings" by Dorothy Dunnett

"He held up a finger. In warning. 'Never,' he said, 'call that dear lady my wife, until you can show me why she is, and how it can be so. Till then, call her my dear sister. Since she was quite certainly my brother's wife, before going through a form of marriage with me.'" -- "Wolf Hall" by Hilary Mantel

"And then, in the darkness, I heard the sound of shuffling, and of clicking on the wooden floor and, looking down toward the noise, saw in lozenge of moonlight a prickly silhouette waddling toward my bed. It was a porcupine. I didn't move. I simply let the creature come to me (my arm was hanging off the bed, my hand close to the floor) and put its wet nose in my palm." -- "Galilee" by Clive Barker

I think I might have done this wrong, and gone with the first full paragraph. Sorry, if that's the case. But "The Game Of Kings" and "Wolf Hall" are very similar, right down to those paragraphs, and I was told this was true, and the closest to a Dorothy Dunnett book I would find.

Yikes. Please, I beg you, don't "bare" with me. Just "bear" with me. What a horrible faux pas. I don't think I've ever made that one before.

And yeah, I kind of hosed that up by posting the first paragraph, not just the first sentence. Sorry. When I finish these four books (only "Wolf Hall" is new to me -- the others I'm re-reading for God knows how many times now,) I'll make sure to do it correctly the next time.

Sometimes, most times, I do wish we had an "edit" feature in here.
