Turn to page 21 of the book you're reading, and tell us what the first full sentence on the page is.

"Dave put the sandwich down on the road, stood up, and walked away." (p.21 of Stuart Maclean's 'Vinyl Cafe Diaries', a collection of short stories. This quote is from 'Walking Man.')

You read books rapidly, Dagny. I fondly remember doing that, staying up all night to finish a book.

Oh, how I can recall staying up all night to finish a book, Mira. Those were the days! But alas, no longer, a few pages and I'm a goner.

About half my reading these days is audio books. A couple of years ago my local librarian mentioned a site which has eBooks and audio books to check out free and you sign up through your local library. Ours is called Camellia, but that might just be for Alabama. The main site might be Overdrive.com

If you don't know about it and are interested, you can check with your local library. I'm fairly sure that all the states have a statewide system.

(I think this thread started out with food quotes way back at the beginning - and here we are again. Popular subject, lol.)

Though I do the vast preponderance of my reading through audio books, this is the one I currently have going in print.

Audio books are about half of my reading, Catreona. And my reading volume has definitely gone up since discovering all the free ones through my library system. Before I thought it was only the classics that I could get for free.

Yes, Danny, the explosion in the availability of audio books over the past few years has been remarkable, especially unabridged books. There's such a wide variety as well, from the frothiest fiction to the most serious nonfiction. And so many books are published simultaneously now in print and on audio, not like the old days when I was reading the Harry Potter books when you had to wait six months or more for the cassette edition.

Thanks for the extra info on "Countdown 1945". It sounds good. Just checked and I can borrow it - eventually that is, there's quite a waiting list.
